Jade Nixon, a PhD candidate at the ��Ƶ’s Women and Gender Studies Institute, and kara lynch (spelled in lower-case), a New York-based artist and associate professor emerita of video and critical studies at Hampshire College, have been named inaugural Black Indigenous Waterways post-doctoral fellow and artist-in-residence, respectively.

The Black Indigenous Waterways research opportunity was developed by U of T's Black Research Network and led alongside the Indigenous Research Network, a U of T institutional strategic initiative. It aims to explore the relationships forged between Black and Indigenous peoples through historical encounters across the Americas, focusing on avenues such as place, identity, and environmental justice.

Nixon’s doctoral research aims to centre Black women’s theories of gathering, place-making, and their relations with the Atlantic Ocean. For her research, she will travel to Martinique, an island in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, to learn more about the histories of the Arawak Caribs. “What excites me the most is to be able to commune with these lands and waters and talk with people who have in-depth knowledge of the Indigenous history of Martinique,” Nixon said. “I will be able to turn to the people who have lived and place-based expertise that I can learn from and who have the desire to share what they know with me.”

For lynch, the artist-in-residence role offers an opportunity to consider how to push boundaries and broaden resources to maximize learning potential. “After seeing what gets unearthed when students are open to approaching material in an interdisciplinary way, our proposal to students is to consider how to visualize data and information,” lynch says. “That shift is what is necessary in a liberation curriculum.”

��Ƶ Scarborough student Maya Ahia is the inaugural recipient of the Kyriakos (Ken) Alexopoulos Memorial Award for Student Mental Health Research.

The award supports research carried out as part of the Inlight Student Mental Health Research Initiative, a U of T institutional strategic initiative that aims to support and foster improvements in student mental health and wellness. It was created to honour the legacy of Ken Alexopoulos, a compassionate person who believed strongly in helping others – especially those dealing with mental health struggles.

Ahia, a 2023-2024 Inlight Research Fellowship recipient, is being recognized for her master’s research that examines access to accessibility support services for post-secondary students with a mental health-related disability.

“Receiving this funding allows me to dedicate my time and energy to this research and enables me to ensure a hands-on and collaborative process with students and faculty,” says Ahia. “The goal of my projects is to see more accessible accommodations created for students.”

Seven students from across the ��Ƶ are recipients of the 2023-2024 Inlight Research Fellowships awarded by Inlight Student Mental Health Research, a U of T institutional strategic initiative committed to improving student mental health and wellness outcomes.

The $10,000 fellowships support graduate scholars who are leading research projects that aim to improve student mental health and well-being on campus and recognize the importance of student-led and co-designed research solutions.

“The Inlight Research Fellowship Program is dedicated to promoting the development of leaders in post-secondary student mental health research,” said Julius Haag, Inlight’s associate director, education and training and an assistant professor, teaching stream in the department of sociology at U of T Mississauga.

“We are actively supporting impactful research that will grow the perspectives and capacity needed to advance student mental health and wellness, as well as centring research that focuses on engaging the experiences and perspectives of our diverse student community.”

Hannah Kozlowski, an MD/PhD student at the ��Ƶ, is the inaugural recipient of the Future Leaders Prize from the Emerging and Pandemic Infections Consortium (EPIC), a U of T Institutional Strategic Initiative.

The prize, to be awarded annually, recognizes outstanding PhD graduates who have completed an excellent infectious disease-focused thesis and demonstrated leadership beyond their studies.

Working with Warren Chan, a professor in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Kozlowski was part of a team that developed a portable smartphone device that could diagnose COVID-19 and other infections in less than one hour. She then started a new research project with Shaun Morris, a clinician-scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children and assistant professor of paediatrics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, to improve public health surveillance for dengue.

Supported by an EPIC Researcher Mobility Award, Kozlowski is in Thailand working this summer with researchers at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit to co-develop a protocol using Nanopore sequencing, a type of genome sequencing, to diagnose dengue infections in patient blood samples.

“The power of an MD/PhD is that you understand these two different worlds and you can help close that gap between them,” Kozlowski says. “It’s quite powerful to be able to do that.”

Kozlowski has been highly involved in the MD/PhD program, helping to create an innovative competency-based curriculum and serving as her class president and on the Temerty Faculty of Medicine Strategic Plan Working Group.
