Four faculty members from the ��Ƶ have been appointed to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

The college recognizes members of the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership who have showcased exceptional accomplishment.

“On behalf of the entire U of T community, I would like to congratulate the faculty members on this most deserved recognition of their excellence,” says Leah Cowen, U of T’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“From cutting-edge research on neurological disorders and cancers to advancements in mathematics and leadership in solidarity economies, these scholars are furthering knowledge that stands to impact people and communities in Canada and around the world.”

The new members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists are:

Stefanos Aretakis of the department of computer and mathematical sciences at U of T Scarborough
Caroline S Hossein of the department of global development studies at U of T Scarborough
Veronique Miron of Unity Health Toronto and the department of immunology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Trevor Pugh of the University Health Network and the department of medical biophysics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine

Aled Edwards, a professor in the departments of medical biophysics and molecular genetics and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the U.K.’s national academy of sciences.

The world’s oldest independent scientific academy in continuous existence, the Royal Society recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted science through its fellowship program. Fellows are elected based on their substantial contributions to fields including mathematics, engineering science and medical science.

Edwards, who holds a Temerty Nexus Chair of Health Innovation and Technology and is the founder and CEO of the Structural Genomics Consortium, was honoured for his contributions to accelerating drug discovery following an open science ethos.

As a fellow of the Royal Society, Edwards will continue to advocate for open science and collaborative research.

Fumin Guo, a post-doctoral researcher in the department of medical biophysics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded a Polanyi Prize in Physiology and Medicine for research that is refining the treatment of ventricular tachycardia or unusually fast heartbeat, which can result in sudden death.

The prestigious John Charles Polanyi prizes are awarded in honour of University Professor John Polanyi, who won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Funded by the government of Ontario and administered by the Council of Ontario Universities, they recognize innovative researchers who are continuing postdoctoral work or have recently been appointed as faculty at an Ontario university.

Guo, a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Banting fellow, is developing tools and algorithms to better visualize and quantify affected tissue in the heart and accurately deliver radiofrequency ablation without damaging surrounding nerves or tissue using real-time MRI guidance. Preclinical studies show the research has promise for improving the treatment and management of ventricular tachycardia.

“Each year, nearly 40,000 Canadians succumb to sudden cardiac death, the most common cause of which is ventricular tachycardia,” said Leah Cowen, U of T’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “Fumin Guo is addressing the urgent need to improve tools and therapy options for this condition – and the ��Ƶ congratulates him on this important recognition of his work to improve the lives of those affected by heart conditions.”
