Micah Stickel of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has been recognized by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) with a 2020-2021 OCUFA Teaching Award.

Stickel is one of three ��Ƶ faculty members receiving with the award, which recognizes exceptional contributions to postsecondary education in Ontario through teaching and leadership. The others are Mairi Cowan of the department of historical studies at the ��Ƶ Mississauga and Dragana Obradovic of the department of Slavic languages and literatures in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

A professor in the teaching stream, Stickel served as vice-dean, first year for U of T Engineering from 2012–2020 and as acting vice-provost, students and vice-provostial adviser on students in 2020–21.

An advocate for greater access, equity and inclusion in postsecondary education, Stickel co-founded and co-chairs the Engineering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Group, and has been a leader in the development and implementation of Engineering’s Broad-Based Admissions Strategy. The recipient of five departmental teaching awards, Stickel was recognized with the President’s Teaching Award – the university’s highest honour for teaching excellence – in 2020.

“Professor Stickel’s leadership has greatly enhanced the student experience across the university and helped to make this a more welcoming and inclusive place to learn,” said Christopher Yip, dean, U of T Engineering. “He is always putting our students first and pushing to ensure that each member of our community can thrive.”

Mairi Cowan, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of historical studies at the ��Ƶ Mississauga, has been named one of Ontario’s most outstanding university teachers.

She has received a 2020-2021 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award.

“Mairi Cowan loves to teach, and students praise her for respecting them as collaborators in the classroom,” said Edmund Pries, the chair of OCUFA’s award committee. “Her passion for history, attentiveness to the needs of her students, and her creativity exemplify the effectiveness of her approach to education.”

A historian of the late medieval and early modern world specializing in the social and religious histories of New France and Scotland, Cowan was also recognized recently for excellence in teaching with primary sources.

During the pandemic, Cowan balanced live and recorded teaching. For her large first-year history course, she pre-recorded her weekly lecture in four or five short parts interspersed with activities, such as watching a video or exploring a website. Later in the week, she would get together online with her students so they could ask questions and discuss the material.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s recipients have distinguished themselves through their dedication and boundless energy,” said OCUFA president Sue Wurtele.

Dragana Obradović, an associate professor in U of T’s department of Slavic languages and literatures in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and Micah Stickel, a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, were also named winners of the OCUFA Teaching Award.

Dragana Obradović, an associate professor in the Faculty of Science’s department of Slavic languages and literatures, has received one of the province’s highest teaching honours.

Obradović was named one of Ontario’s most outstanding university teachers for 2020-2021 by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA). She is one of three ��Ƶ faculty members receiving the award. The others are Micah Stickel of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and Mairi Cowan of the department of historical studies at the ��Ƶ Mississauga.

“My colleagues and I were thrilled to learn of Dragana’s teaching award,” says Taras Koznarsky, a professor of Ukrainian literature and the department’s interim chair. “We certainly knew that Dragana is a star teacher, but it’s wonderful to see her recognized in this way. Her intimate knowledge of Slavic cultures and the Balkans – an area known for its traumatic recent and distant past – showcases her talents as a keen and nuanced critical thinker.”

Alongside classes in literature and cultural history, Obradović teaches Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (BCS) as one language – an approach that required single-handedly creating teaching materials from scratch because no textbooks existed for such a course.

“Thousands of faculty are eligible for this award and I remember feeling so much gratitude for the nomination itself,” says Obradović “It was a huge investment of time on the part of my faculty colleagues, and they were clearly interested in putting in that work for me.

“The award itself is the icing on the cake.”

Professor William R. Cluett of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has been recognized with a 2020 OCUFA Teaching Award from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations for exceptional contributions to postsecondary education through teaching and leadership.

“Over the past 25 years Professor Cluett has played a leading role in developing many of the programs that make U of T Engineering one of the world’s best engineering schools,” said Dean Chris Yip. “On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to him on this well-deserved honour.”

Cluett, who has used innovative techniques in his classroom for decades, has also helped reshape the university’s approach to engineering education. He led the development and launch of the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) and played a key role in the creation of the flagship first–year design and communication course: Engineering Strategies and Practice. He also led the development of the major in engineering mathematics, statistics, and finance and oversaw a significant expansion of summer research opportunities for engineering science students.

In 2014, Cluett received the Bill Burgess Teacher of the Year Award for Large Classes and in 2016, he received the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2018, he received the President’s Teaching Award, U of T’s highest honour for teaching.
