��Ƶ alumnus Olugbenga Olubanjo’s startup Reeddi Inc. has been named one of 15 finalists of the inaugural Earthshot Prize.

The clean-tech startup created by the recent graduate of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering’s department of civil and mineral engineering is one of only three finalists in the “Fix Our Climate” category, according to a recent video announcement made by Prince William.

“I am honoured to introduce the 15 innovators, leaders, and visionaries who are the first-ever finalists for The Earthshot Prize,” the Duke of Cambridge said. “They are working with the urgency required in this decisive decade for life on Earth and will inspire all of us with their optimism in our ability to rise to the greatest challenges in human history.”

Reeddi’s portable and rechargeable batteries, powered by solar charging stations, provide affordable and dependable energy to people living in parts of the world where energy infrastructure is unreliable. The company has a goal of serving 12,000 new households and businesses monthly by the end of 2021.

“We are very happy to see how far we have come as acompany in order to be recognized for such a prestigious award,” Olubanjo says. “We’re even more pumped to leverage the support from the award to scale our innovation and accelerate its impact in more energy-poor communities and regions.”

Two U of T Engineering professors and three alumni have been honoured by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) with Ontario Professional Engineers Awards.

The awards recognize professional engineers in Ontario who have made outstanding contributions to the profession and to society.

Professor Baher Abdulhai of the department of civil and mineral engineering won the Engineering Excellence medal, recognizing overall excellence in the practice of engineering. Professor Eric Diller of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering won the Young Engineer Medal, for an early-career engineer who has demonstrated professional excellence as well as service to the community.

Alumnus Hugo Blasutta received the Management Medal, for innovative management contributing significantly to an engineering achievement and alumnus Peter Halsall won the Gold Medal, recognizing public service, technical excellence, and outstanding professional leadership. Alumna Sandra Odendahl received the Citizenship Award, given to an engineer who has made significant volunteer contributions to the community.

“These recipients illustrate the amazing depth and breadth of the contributions being made by U of T engineers, spanning research, management, entrepreneurship, professional leadership, and service to the profession and to the community,” said U of T Engineering Dean Christopher Yip. “On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to these outstanding engineering faculty and alumni on this well-deserved recognition.”

Four members of the ��Ƶ’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been inducted as fellows of the Canadian Engineering Education Association.

The honour recognizes noteworthy service to engineering education, engineering leadership, or engineering design education. The U of T Engineering inductees were among 21 engineering education professionals from across Canada in the association’s inaugural cohort.

They are:

Professor Greg Evans of the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry and the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education & Practice (ISTEP)
Professor Jason Foster of the department of civil and mineral engineering and the division of engineering science
Professor Susan McCahan of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering; McCahan is also U of T's vice-provost, academic programs and vice-provost, innovations in undergraduate education
Professor Lisa Romkey of the division of engineering science and ISTEP

“It is truly an honour to be included in this group of highly respected engineering educators,” Romkey told ��Ƶ Engineering News. “These individuals have carved out spaces in their own institutions for this critical work, and I am lucky to consider many of the Fellows close colleagues and mentors.”
