Fanny Chevalier named to France's Order of Academic Palms

Fanny Chevalier, assistant professor in the department of computer science and department of statistical sciences in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been made a knight in the prestigious Order of Academic Palms (l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques), France’s national order recognizing exemplary services to education and culture.

Originally established by Napoleon I in 1808, the civil honour is awarded to members of the educational community for their contributions to French culture both in France and abroad. 

“I am profoundly honoured to be bestowed with the prestigious Order of Academic Palms from France and humbled to play a role in fostering and strengthening the relationship between France and Canada,” Chevalier said.

“I will wear this title with pride, and look forward to contribute with dedication to the shared advancement of scientific knowledge, education and the deepening ties between our two nations.”

Chevalier received the badge from Tudor Alexis, the Consul General of France in Toronto, at a recent ceremony.

Chevalier’s research lies at the intersection of human-computer interaction and information visualization. Her work delves into addressing the challenges involved in the design, implementation and evaluation of novel interactive tools supporting visual analytics and creative activities.

Alec Jacobson, an associate professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, is a 2022 recipient of the Outstanding Early Career Computer Science Research Award from Computer Science Canada/Informatique Canada (CS-Can/Info-Can), Canada’s national academic organization for computer science.

The award, announced earlier this year, recognizes rising academic researchers at Canadian universities who are within 10 years of completing their PhD.

Jacobson’s research spans computational geometry, graphics, vision, machine learning and human-computer interaction. His contributions to geometry processing research have had a significant impact on fields ranging from architecture to structural engineering and theatre.

Jacobson, who holds the Canada Research Chair in geometry processing, has served as a valuable mentor. In 2020, when most research programs were impeded and conferences cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated the Toronto Geometry Colloquium, an online research web series to serve as a platform for underrepresented researchers.

He was celebrated alongside his fellow 2022 CS-CAN/Info-Can award winners at a gala in Montreal in June.

Ten ��Ƶ graduate students are receiving DiDi Graduate Awards in recognition of their contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, vehicle autonomy, transportation analytics, human-machine interfacing and related topics.

They are the first U of T students to receive scholarships from Beijing-based Didi Chuxing, the world’s largest ride-hailing service.

“U of T is very prestigious in cultivating outstanding leaders and innovators,” said Hongtu Zhu, chief scientist of statistics at DiDi. “DiDi hopes to contribute to this endeavor in fostering top talents to solve the world’s transportation, environmental and employment challenges with smart transportation innovations.”

The recipients are:

PhD students Danijar Hafner and Nicole Barbosa Sultanum, from the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering PhD students Alaa Itani and Junshi Xu of civil engineering; Hao Wang and Bilal Majed Taha of electrical and computer engineering and Dengbo He of mechanical and industrial engineering
Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering master’s student Nazli Eser Kaya of mechanical and industrial engineering
Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering master’s students Abhishek Goudar and Shangyi Xiong of the ��Ƶ Institute for Aerospace Studies

��Ƶ, a University Professor Emeritus at the ��Ƶ, has received the 2019 Honda Prize for his pioneering work in the field of deep learning in artificial intelligence – and for his contributions to bring this technology to the broader world.

The Honda Foundation’s Honda Prize is awarded to one interdisciplinary researcher each year who is addressing global challenges and contributing toward “the creation of a truly humane civilization.”

Hinton is the first U of T researcher and the second member of a Canadian institution to receive the international prize, which comes with an honorarium of 10 million yen (about $123,000).

Michelle Craig has received a President’s Teaching Award for sustained excellence in teaching, research in teaching and the integration of teaching and research.

An associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, Craig is one of two professors receiving the award this year. She led a team that produced more than 125 videos and over 200 exercises about C and Systems Programming that have been viewed thousands of times by U of T students.

President’s Teaching Award winners receive an annual professional development allowance of $10,000 for five years, and are designated members of the U of T Teaching Academy for at least five years. The academy meets regularly to discuss teaching and offers advice to the vice-president and provost, as well as the director of Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation.
