The ��Ƶ's Sustainability Pathways Program, an initiative of the President's Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability (CECCS), was shortlisted for a 2024 QS Reimagine Education Award.

Given by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Reimagine Education Awards honour innovative pedagogical approaches that boost learning outcomes and employability, as well as effective methods of teaching sustainability.

U of T's Sustainability Pathways Program was shortlisted in the category of sustainability literacy. The program combines courses, co-curricular activities, campus-as-a-living lab projects and capstone leadership training to educate students across U of T's three campuses.

“Our goal is to ‘reach the rest’ – students who would not otherwise engage with sustainability as part of their degrees," said John Robinson, CECCS co-chair and professor in the School of the Environment and Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. "This approach is helping to shape the next generation of sustainability leaders, regardless of their field of study, while also providing a transformative educational experience for students.”

The recognition comes after U of T was named the most sustainable university in the world by QS for the second year in a row.

The ��Ƶ has been named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for the 19th consecutive year.

The competition recognizes employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies. Winners are announced in a special magazine distributed online in The Globe & Mail.

U of T was recognized for supporting the families of its employees through an array of resources, including the dedicated Family Care Office, on-site child care options and a variety of family-friendly spaces; encouraging employees to keep fit and stay healthy with subsidized memberships to fitness facilities, health benefits coverage that extends to retirees with no age limit; and encouraging employees to save for the future with generous contributions to a defined benefit pension plan.

"The world is changing so fast that employers must constantly evolve to meet their employees’ needs", said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, U of T's vice-president, people strategy, equity and culture.

"It is both a core responsibility and a privilege to provide connection and wide-ranging supports for our world-class employees. I’d like to thank all our faculty, librarians, and staff for cultivating inclusive and responsive working and learning environments across our three campuses."

Walter Tavares, an assistant professor in the department of health and society at U of T Scarborough, has been awarded King Charles III’s Coronation Medal.

The award, which was created to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada.

Tavares was recognized for his contributions to the field of paramedicine, which include helping establish U of T Scarborough's specialist program in paramedicine – Canada's first undergraduate degree program in the field – and serving as inaugural director of the Paramedicine Collaborative in the department of family and community medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Tavares also partnered with the Paramedic Association of Canada to create guiding principles for the future of paramedicine, and spearheaded Canada's first international paramedic exchange program. He is founder of the McNally Project, a research initiative aimed at building research capacity and contributions within paramedicine.

“These accomplishments and roles reflect the collective efforts of numerous individuals, teams, learners, and leaders in paramedicine and beyond, with whom I have been privileged to collaborate,” says Tavares. “I am deeply grateful for these opportunities, humbled by this recognition, and inspired to continue contributing to the advancement of the profession.”

Christine Szustaczek, the ��Ƶ's vice-president, communications, has been inducted into the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)'s College of Fellows.

CPRS names fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of public relations and communications management.

Szustaczek has headed U of T Communications since 2023, overseeing an award-winning, tri-campus team of writers, communications strategists, brand marketing professionals, digital and media relations specialists, videographers and photographers. Her role in enhancing internal communications and sharing U of T’s story – including the wide-ranging impact of the university’s world-leading research and scholarship – has been instrumental in the department’s success.

“I am honoured to join the ranks of so many giants in our field,” Szustaczek said. “Their collective achievement has transformed our profession - and the places we all serve - for the better. The fact that this award is peer reviewed makes the recognition all the more special.

“I thank the Canadian Public Relations Society for this tremendous honour and I commit to continuing to uphold my work to the highest standards expected of us so that I too can strive to be a model for others.”

The ��Ƶ has received a congratulatory scroll from the City of Toronto in recognition of its leadership in sustainability.

U of T was awarded the scroll for its contributions as a founding member of the Green Will Initiative, which brings together large organizations that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the City of Toronto’s net-zero strategy.

The scroll was presented by Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie at Hart House and accepted by Scott Hendershot, senior manager at U of T’s Sustainability Office, and Catherine Thorn, director, sustainability and energy management, on behalf of the university.

“U of T is proud to take on a leadership role in advancing environmental sustainability in the region by undertaking initiatives that deliver dramatic and rapid emissions reductions,” said Ron Saporta, chief operating officer, property services and sustainability. “Today’s recognition affirms that we’re on the right track as we pursue our ambition of becoming climate-positive, and in doing so, support the City of Toronto’s aggressive climate action strategy.”

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues in the City of Toronto to further advance our shared aim of a more sustainable future.”

Maya Povhe, a fourth-year student in the management and international business program at U of T Scarborough, has been named a winner of the Canadian Economics Association’s inaugural Economics Profession Data Committee (EPDC) Research Competition.

The competition recognizes proposals that explore the use of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) data to support understandings of EDI in the economics profession.

Povhe was awarded for her proposal, “The ��Ƶs of Economics Students: The Case of Canada,” which explores socio-economic diversity in the field and why those with a PhD in economics are more likely to come from wealthy families and have parents with PhDs.

She plans to continue that line of research at U of T. “Economists play a key role in measuring and designing policies for income inequality – it is important that their field in particular reflects a range of personal experiences with those issues,” she says.

Connaught New Researcher Awards

Daniel Lysak, a PhD student in the department of physical and environmental sciences at U of T Scarborough, has been recognized with a Dean's Doctoral Excellence Scholarship.

The annual prize, valued at $25,000, is awarded by the Faculty of Arts & Science to a PhD student whose academic excellence is matched by their contributions to the community.

Lysak's research involves using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study environmental stress at the molecular level. The author of several groundbreaking articles, he has also been a longtime advocate for graduate students.

“Daniel has been working on some of the most challenging interdisciplinary research and his efforts have consistently led to world-class publications,” says his doctoral supervisor, Professor Andre Simpson.

The recipient of numerous academic awards, Lysak says the Dean's Doctoral Excellence Scholarship is particularly meaningful given the often solitary nature of his work. “Graduate school involves a lot of independent work,” he says. “It is often hard to tell if you are doing a good job, which leads to self-doubt and a kind of mental struggle. So an award like this is very encouraging, and it’s truly a great honour."

The ��Ƶ has recognized 51 faculty members across its three campuses with Connaught New Researcher Awards.

The annual awards support early-stage researchers in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and other fields – and aim to enhance their competitiveness for external awards. They are part of the Connaught Fund, Canada’s largest internal university research funding program.

“The Connaught New Researcher Awards are designed to help accelerate the research programs of our hugely talented early-career scholars as they establish themselves in their respective fields,” said Leah Cowen, U of T’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I am excited to see their work on a range of important issues such as next-generation vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases, decarbonization retrofits and housing affordability, and the physics of wildfire-generated storms."
