It also looks at institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and World Bank.</p> <p>To determine environmental impact, the ranking evaluates environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it examines&nbsp;<a href="/news/u-t-among-top-15-universities-globally-graduate-employability-times-higher-education">employability and outcomes</a>, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking looks at indicators such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.&nbsp;</p> <p>U of T performed particularly well in the social impact category this year, moving up three spots to first globally. It also ranked fifth in the world for environmental impact and tied for 23<sup>rd</sup>&nbsp;<a href="/news/how-u-t-s-secret-sauce-governance-model-set-it-five-decades-success">in governance</a>.</p> <p>U of T’s performance led a robust showing by Canadian universities. The University of British Columbia shared fifth spot with University College London, making Canada the only country to have two universities in the top five. Two other Canadian universities placed in the top 50: McGill University (15<sup>th</sup>) and Western University (30<sup>th</sup>).</p> <p>The QS sustainability ranking comes as U of T forges ahead with a host of climate-focused initiatives on its own campuses including:&nbsp;<a href="/news/u-t-cut-carbon-emissions-half-st-george-campus-2027">Project Leap</a>, a $138-million infrastructure project that will cut emissions on the St. George campus in half by 2027;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/green/home/climate-positive/distribute#:~:text=Utilities%20Plant%20Tunnel-,Project%20SHIFT,-Dubbed%20Project%20SHIFT">Project SHIFT</a>, a U of T Mississauga initiative to speed up the transition from natural gas to electricity; and a combination of new climate-responsible constructions and energy retrofits to older buildings at U of T Scarborough.</p> <p>Spurred by these and other efforts, the university’s three campuses last year made <a href="/news/u-t-s-plan-become-climate-positive-expanded-all-three-campuses">a&nbsp;landmark commitment</a>&nbsp;to reduce more greenhouse gases than they emit in the coming years. And U of T continues to make progress on&nbsp;its <a href="/news/u-t-divest-fossil-fuel-investments-create-climate-positive-campus">pledge to divest from fossil fuel investments&nbsp;in its endowment fund</a>.</p> <p>At the same time, U of T is working to enhance Canada’s green energy sector through projects like the&nbsp;<a href="https://cpe.utoronto.ca/grid-modernization-centre/">Grid Modernization Centre</a>, a state-of-the-art facility led by&nbsp;<a href="https://cpe.utoronto.ca/">Climate Positive Energy</a>, an&nbsp;<a href="https://isi.utoronto.ca/">institutional strategic initiative</a>,&nbsp;that will serve as a hub for testing, development and commercialization.</p> <p>U of T is also playing a leadership role in sustainability by engaging with regional, national and international partners. The state-of-the-art building also hosts the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society, which is at the forefront of research and thought leadership on AI safety and responsible development, with Hinton one of its advisory board members.</p> <p>“In short, Canada has played a key role in launching and driving the AI revolution and we’re a world leader in understanding and promoting safe, human-centred AI,” President Gertler said.&nbsp;</p> <p>The theme of responsible AI was also brought up during&nbsp;a Q-and-A with Hinton, who revealed that the remarkable information-sharing abilities of large language models played a big role in sparking his now oft-repeated concerns around the current pace of the technology’s development.&nbsp;</p> <p>“That’s when I came to realize that the fact that they’re so much better at sharing probably means that digital intelligence is just a better form of intelligence than us – and that’s what got me so worried,” he said.&nbsp;</p> <p>Asked what responsible AI regulation looks like, Hinton said there must first be a consensus around solving the problem from a scientific standpoint – not unlike the scientific consensus that has emerged around climate change.</p> <p>“Like the early days of climate change, the first thing to do is figure out what’s causing it and get scientific agreement on how you can fix it. Then, the second thing to do is get the politicians to do something about it … but here, we haven’t finished the first thing yet.”&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Mon, 09 Dec 2024 20:48:27 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 310957 at Ƶ shares 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize for work on deep learning /news/geoffrey-hinton-shares-2024-vinfuture-grand-prize-work-deep-learning <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Ƶ shares 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize for work on deep learning</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-12/UofT96529_2024-10-24-Hinton-FitzGerald-Building-%289%29-smaller-crop.jpg?h=9c94f4e7&amp;itok=LKA4Gyq0 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-12/UofT96529_2024-10-24-Hinton-FitzGerald-Building-%289%29-smaller-crop.jpg?h=9c94f4e7&amp;itok=jYoVrKat 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-12/UofT96529_2024-10-24-Hinton-FitzGerald-Building-%289%29-smaller-crop.jpg?h=9c94f4e7&amp;itok=KB0a2GpX 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-12/UofT96529_2024-10-24-Hinton-FitzGerald-Building-%289%29-smaller-crop.jpg?h=9c94f4e7&amp;itok=LKA4Gyq0" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-12-06T14:32:41-05:00" title="Friday, December 6, 2024 - 14:32" class="datetime">Fri, 12/06/2024 - 14:32</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>(photo by Johnny Guatto)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/leah-cowen" hreflang="en">Leah Cowen</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/schwartz-reisman-institute-technology-and-society" hreflang="en">Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/awards" hreflang="en">Awards</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Their creativity, intellectual prowess and dedication are vital to the university’s mission of generating solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time,” said <strong>Trevor Young</strong>, U of T’s vice-president and provost.&nbsp;</p> <p>“At the same time, financial pressures can have a detrimental impact on students’ well-being and ability to advance their research. By increasing our financial support, we hope to alleviate some of that pressure and improve the graduate student experience, ensuring that our programs can continue to recruit and retain the next generation of exceptional scholars.”&nbsp;</p> <p>An estimated 2,800 domestic and international PhD students – more than half of the funded cohort – will see their funding increase under the new measure.&nbsp;</p> <p>The new funding commitment comes as governments around the world increasingly recognize research as an engine of economic innovation. In its 2024 budget, Canada’s federal government <a href="/news/u-t-welcomes-federal-budget-s-investments-research-and-innovation">made a significant reinvestment in the country’s research and talent</a>. This included $1.8 billion over five years to the federal granting councils and $825 million to federally funded graduate scholarships, raising the value of doctoral scholarships to $40,000.&nbsp;</p> <p>The federally supported scholarships, however, are competitive – most students do not receive them. The new funding commitment from U of T raises the minimum level that all PhD and SJD students receive. &nbsp;</p> <p>“I have always loved U of T, and it has allowed me to excel to places that I could only dream of. However, many times I deeply struggled to balance my academic aspirations with the intense demands of living and studying,” said<strong> Tina Keshavarzian</strong>, a PhD candidate in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine's department of medical biophysics whose research focuses on using single-cell sequencing, data science and machine learning to understand how cancers become more aggressive. The increased funding, she said, “can provide the stability students need to engage in their research and research community, leading to better academic outcomes and shorter times to completion. &nbsp;</p> <p>“When students feel supported and fulfilled, it creates a positive ripple effect in their academic teams and the entire university ecosystem.”&nbsp;</p> <p>The updated base funding package will be primarily supported by funds from divisional sources – such as&nbsp;research grants, fellowships and other funding streams administered by individual faculties and graduate units – with additional support from the university’s central budget to soften the financial impacts on some academic divisions.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I want to acknowledge, the tremendous leadership from deans across the university” said <strong>Joshua Barker</strong>, vice-provost, graduate research and education &amp; dean of the School of Graduate Studies. “Increasing graduate funding for our PhD and SJD students is truly a collaborative effort, one that requires commitment from all our partners – graduate units, faculty members, the university advancement teams and the university’s senior leadership. Together, we can meet this challenge and provide the support our graduate students deserve.”<br> &nbsp;<br> U of T has also launched a PhD scholarship matching program that seeks to create 250 new PhD awards as part of <a href="https://defygravitycampaign.utoronto.ca/">the Defy Gravity fundraising campaign</a>. A donor’s $100,000 gift, combined with U of T matching funds, will create a $250,000 endowed award, which will generate an annual income of approximately $10,000. This will combine with other sources of funding to increase the pool of funds available for PhD students.&nbsp;</p> <p>“PhDs are our most research-intensive degrees and the students who pursue them spend a lot of time at the university,” Barker said. “Their work has helped make U of T the highest ranked university in Canada and one of the world’s top research institutions – and a large number of our PhDs go on to work across Canada in both academia and the private sector, strengthening the country’s economy and innovation landscape.</p> <p>“Investing in our PhDs means investing in Canada’s future.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Barker noted the new funding initiative comes on the heels of extensive research and consultations. He pointed to U of T’s annual <a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/about/explore-our-data/gradseru/">Graduate Student Experience in the Research University (gradSERU) surveys</a>, in which a substantial number of respondents cited financial pressure as an obstacle to their academic progress.</p> <p>In fall 2022, U of T convened a Graduate Funding Working Group – chaired by Barker and comprising faculty members, divisional leaders and students – to examine the graduate funding landscape and make recommendations. The working group <a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Context-and-Recommendations-Final-Accessible-GFWG-20240115-1.pdf">issued its report the following year, outlining its considerations and recommendations</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“We've heard the feedback, and the institution is now stepping up to do what's necessary to invest in our PhD students' well-being and success,” Barker said.&nbsp;</p> <p>Keshavarzian, a member of the tri-campus working group who previously directed Temerty Medicine's <a href="https://uoftfomgrc.ca/">graduate representation committee</a>, said the working group was key to understanding and addressing the concerns of graduate students across U of T's three campuses.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This structure has allowed us to bring together diverse perspectives and create solutions at a university-wide level, rather than fragmenting the responsibility among various departments,” said Keshavarzian, who earned her honours bachelor of science degree at U of T before returning for graduate studies. “I’m incredibly proud to be part of an institution willing to take on such hard work, aligning resources and leadership to address challenges systematically.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This collaborative approach has helped ensure that our university remains responsive to the needs of graduate students and committed to creating an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <h3><a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/about/innovation-in-graduate-education/graduate-funding-at-u-of-t/">Read more at the School of Graduate Studies</a></h3> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:00:55 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310523 at Math grad says U of T taught him to 'learn how to learn' /news/math-grad-says-u-t-taught-him-learn-how-learn <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Math grad says U of T taught him to 'learn how to learn'</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=VRcnHd5a 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=JyLJpEAJ 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=AfuLTc9U 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=VRcnHd5a" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-11-06T15:15:18-05:00" title="Wednesday, November 6, 2024 - 15:15" class="datetime">Wed, 11/06/2024 - 15:15</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Sean Fridkin, who earned a bachelor's in math and computer science, counts&nbsp;University Professor Emeritus and Nobel Prize-winner Ƶ among his inspirations&nbsp;(supplied image)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/convocation-2024" hreflang="en">Convocation 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Plus, the people are great ... it’s a great place to learn, grow and network.”</p> <p>Fridkin spoke to <em>U of T News</em> about his interest in math and computer science, plans for the future and thoughts on how students can get the most out of their undergraduate years:</p> <hr> <p><strong>How did you become interested in mathematics and computer science?</strong></p> <p>I think math is about trying to understand the world. All around, you have things going on, things happening, and math is seeing the patterns and getting a deeper understanding for what’s going on. That’s always interested me. I think it interests most people – they just don’t know that it’s called math and there’s a language for it.</p> <p>The way I did my math major is I took a bunch of courses in different fields, but the main thing that unifies them is they teach you to think about the world in different ways. You have classes about the closeness of objects, analysis, topology, you’ve got to think about different types of infinities … You expand the way in which you think, and that interested me more than any specific path within mathematics.</p> <p>In terms of computer science, I really like numerical methods, where you try to approximate – given some data – and interpolate with models to predict real things. I find machine learning numerical methods really fun.</p> <p><strong>What was your approach to learning while at U of T?</strong></p> <p>The number one goal for me in university was to learn how to learn – and learn how to think about new things and discover new ways of thinking. That’s the thing U of T gave me. You get the opportunity to talk to lots of different people, lots of different perspectives and learn from professors who are very experienced in the field and often have a unique way of thinking about different problems.</p> <p>Also, with the assignments, you have to push yourself and that’s what I enjoyed about it. It was a little different from high school, where an assignment might take you 30 minutes. Here, for some of the math classes, I would have to initially spend maybe a couple of days on one assignment. And I learned a lot from that. I think it’s going to impact me, not only as I go further in my career, but also in life.</p> <p><strong>What are your plans for your career and education going forward?</strong></p> <p>I’m looking for computer science roles. I want to learn from interesting people and work on interesting problems.&nbsp;That’s the main goal. I don’t have any specific field that I’m going for within computer science – just interesting problems and people who I know I’ll be able to learn from and who I admire and respect.</p> <p>I really enjoy learning, but I think most learning can be done informally, on your own or with good people at a company. But certainly, if there’s something interesting that I want to learn more about and that I can’t do on my own, I would 100 per cent go back to school.</p> <p>Long term, I want to transition to something in the machine learning world.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What would be your advice to students starting university?</strong></p> <p>I think the actual coursework is secondary to what you do in university. You should learn how to approach new problems ... For me, since I was going into math and computer science, I read a little bit of math stuff and I mostly worked on brain teaser problems. That helped me much more than any domain knowledge in any of the fields.</p> <p>As soon as you build that thought process in your head – as soon as that becomes your natural way of thinking – everything becomes so much easier.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 06 Nov 2024 20:15:18 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310248 at 'A profound sense of responsibility': Wes Hall installed as U of T's 35th chancellor /news/profound-sense-responsibility-wes-hall-installed-u-t-s-35th-chancellor <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">'A profound sense of responsibility': Wes Hall installed as U of T's 35th chancellor</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-28-Wes-Hall-%2835%29-crop.jpg?h=5a922bb2&amp;itok=qyfu2jBt 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-10/2024-10-28-Wes-Hall-%2835%29-crop.jpg?h=5a922bb2&amp;itok=T4TmB5nA 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-10/2024-10-28-Wes-Hall-%2835%29-crop.jpg?h=5a922bb2&amp;itok=laNb8rjp 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-28-Wes-Hall-%2835%29-crop.jpg?h=5a922bb2&amp;itok=qyfu2jBt" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-11-01T12:23:54-04:00" title="Friday, November 1, 2024 - 12:23" class="datetime">Fri, 11/01/2024 - 12:23</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Wes Hall, centre, is officially installed as U of T’s 35th chancellor in a ceremony attended by two of his predecessors in the role, Rose Patten, far left, and Vivienne Poy, not pictured, as well as Governing Council Chair Anna Kennedy, second from left, and U of T President Meric Gertler, at right (photo by Johnny Guatto)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/convocation-2024" hreflang="en">Convocation 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/trevor-young" hreflang="en">Trevor Young</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/wesley-hall" hreflang="en">Wesley Hall</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/rose-patten" hreflang="en">Rose Patten</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/chancellor" hreflang="en">Chancellor</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Two years later, he struck out on his own, working various menial jobs to get by – including as a dishwasher and as a poultry company’s “chicken catcher.”&nbsp;</p> <p>“For me to get through all those circumstances in life, I had to fight to be able to succeed,” Hall says.</p> <p>And succeed, he did. Hall is now one of Canada’s most influential people –&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingsdaleadvisors.com/index">a&nbsp;major player on Bay Street</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbc.ca/dragonsden/dragons/wes-hall">an investor and TV personality on CBC’s&nbsp;Dragons’ Den</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://blacknorth.ca/">a philanthropist dedicated to tackling systemic racism in the business world&nbsp;and beyond</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>At an Oct. 28 convocation ceremony for graduates from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, Hall will be officially installed as&nbsp;<a href="/news/wesley-j-hall-elected-serve-35th-chancellor-university-toronto">the 35th chancellor of the Ƶ</a>. He will then proceed to confer more than 4,000 degrees to graduating students during 10 ceremonies in Convocation Hall throughout the week.</p> <p>Hall says he’s honoured to serve as an advocate and ambassador for an institution committed to empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers drawn from all sections of society.</p> <p>“The Ƶ, in my opinion, is the biggest source of upward mobility in Canada,” said Hall, who began his&nbsp;term as chancellor&nbsp;on July 1, succeeding&nbsp;<strong>Rose Patten</strong>.</p> <p>In particular, Hall cited the diversity of U of T's student body, with representation from 180 countries and territories, and the university's extensive student financial supports – which include <a href="https://governingcouncil.utoronto.ca/secretariat/policies/student-financial-support-policy-april-30-1998">a pledge that no student admitted to the university should be prevented from studying because of a lack of financial means</a> – as key elements that are setting the stage for a brighter future.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Think about the impact that will have on our society moving forward,” he says. “This is why I wanted to be a part of this university. This is where change happens.”</p> <p>For Hall, change didn’t come quickly or easily. After he moved out of his father’s home, he worked during the day and took courses in the evening to earn a law clerk certificate. He began his Bay Street journey as a mailroom clerk and law clerk, before eventually landing his first managerial role at CIBC Mellon, as a relationship manager.</p> <p>As a young Black man managing 11 employees, many of whom were much older and white, Hall said earning the respect of his team was far from straightforward, teaching him importance of leaving his ego at the door.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I don’t necessarily want to be the smartest person in the room. I want to be the person who figures the room out and understands how people there operate,” he says.</p> <p>Hall adds that figuring out what made his reports tick helped him turn his biggest detractors into powerful allies.</p> <p>Years later, Hall would confront doubters again when he came up with a business idea for a service that provides strategic advice to shareholders on corporate governance matters. He pitched it to his then-employers. “They thought it was nuts,” he says.</p> <p>Undeterred, he approached banks for a loan so he could build the company on his own. “And they go, ‘That’s so wacky, we’re not going to fund that.’”</p> <p>Eventually, Hall convinced his wife to borrow $100,000, using their house as collateral. He used the funds to set up his firm,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingsdaleadvisors.com/">Kingsdale Advisors</a>. That was in 2003. Today, Kingsdale is regarded one of Canada’s top shareholder services and advisory firms, while Hall is one of the most respected power brokers in Canadian business.</p> <p>In recent years, his reputation has expanded beyond executive boardrooms into living rooms across the country as a sought-after investor on CBC’s&nbsp;Dragon’s Den, where he says he’s constantly inspired by the creativity and drive of Canada’s entrepreneurs. “Most people come up with ideas in their mind, but entrepreneurs actually act on them – even ideas that are far-fetched in a lot of cases – and make it happen in spite of naysayers telling them they can’t do it,” Hall says.</p> <p>Hall says he’s passionate about using his platform to help uplift people from underrepresented backgrounds.&nbsp;</p> <p>In 2020, following the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, he set up the&nbsp;<a href="https://blacknorth.ca/">BlackNorth Initiative</a>, an NGO that provides scholarships for students, mentorship and networking for entrepreneurs, and a homeownership bridge program to help Black families own a home.</p> <p>“Home ownership allowed me to start Kingsdale and create the value that I have today,” Hall said. “I want to create that same pride and opportunity for as many under-served families as possible.”</p> <p>Hall has also sought to contribute to the empowerment of entrepreneurs through&nbsp;<a href="https://weshall.ca/">WeShall Investments</a>, a private equity firm dedicated to supporting BIPOC-owned ventures.</p> <p>Hall is mindful of the fact that his success story – and those of other immigrants, people of colour and people from other underprivileged backgrounds – shouldn’t be used to downplay the scale of inequality in society.&nbsp;</p> <p>“How many others are out there who have been deprived from fulfilling their true potential?” he asks.</p> <p>A staunch believer in U of T’s mission to empower people of all backgrounds to flourish, Hall said he urges students to adopt a positive, forward-looking attitude to overcome obstacles.</p> <p>He cited, as an example, Cree actor, artist and filmmaker&nbsp;<strong>Shirley Cheechoo</strong>, who said she preferred to be recognized as a “warrior” rather than a “survivor” of Canada’s horrific residential school system. She made the remark during <a href="/news/u-t-community-commemorates-orange-shirt-day-national-day-truth-and-reconciliation">a keynote address at a&nbsp;U of T event to&nbsp;mark Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation</a>, which Hall attended.</p> <p>“I was successful in fighting, and it’s now my job to show people that in order for you to go through things successfully, you have to be a fighter,” Hall says.</p> <p>“It’s all about us changing our mindset and being more positive. If we do that, we can walk through life appreciating every day, celebrating every accomplishment and never taking it for granted.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 24 Oct 2024 17:49:07 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310038 at ‘One of the great minds of the 21st century’: U of T celebrates Ƶ’s Nobel Prize  /news/one-great-minds-21st-century-u-t-celebrates-geoffrey-hinton-s-nobel-prize <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">‘One of the great minds of the 21st century’: U of T celebrates Ƶ’s Nobel Prize&nbsp;</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-10-UofT-Celebrates-Geoffrey-Hinton-Nobel-b-%2810%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=rOj6za4X 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-10/2024-10-10-UofT-Celebrates-Geoffrey-Hinton-Nobel-b-%2810%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=MDlROSRE 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-10/2024-10-10-UofT-Celebrates-Geoffrey-Hinton-Nobel-b-%2810%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=1S_vB6hs 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-10-UofT-Celebrates-Geoffrey-Hinton-Nobel-b-%2810%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=rOj6za4X" alt="Hinton speaking at the podium during the event"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-10-17T13:24:21-04:00" title="Thursday, October 17, 2024 - 13:24" class="datetime">Thu, 10/17/2024 - 13:24</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>University Professor Emeritus Ƶ, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, attends a celebration event held at the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus (photo by Mac Pattanasuttinont)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/leah-cowen" hreflang="en">Leah Cowen</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/schwartz-reisman-innovation-campus" hreflang="en">Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/wesley-hall" hreflang="en">Wesley Hall</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/schwartz-reisman-institute-technology-and-society" hreflang="en">Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/cifar" hreflang="en">CIFAR</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/department-computer-science" hreflang="en">Department of Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-applied-science-engineering" hreflang="en">Faculty of Applied Science &amp;
