The ��Ƶ is ranked first in Canada and 26th globally in the latest edition of ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s worldwide university ranking.

Among public universities, U of T placed sixth in North America and 15th overall in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released last week. The ranking’s creators evaluated more than 2,500 universities to determine the 1,000 included in this year’s publication.

The Shanghai ranking comes on the heels of U of T’s strong performance in two other rankings this year: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings and the QS World University Rankings, which respectively ranked U of T 17th and 25th overall.

“These results are a testament to the ��Ƶ’s global reputation for scholarly excellence and high quality, impactful research across a wide range of disciplines,” said Trevor Young, U of T’s vice-president and provost.

“The credit goes to our entire academic and research community and their commitment to furthering knowledge, while working tirelessly to address some of the most complex global challenges of our time.”

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is based on six weighted measures of research and academic performance collected from third-party sources. They include: the number of alumni and faculty winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories; the number of papers published in the prestigious journals Nature and Science; articles cited in major science and social sciences citation indices; and each institution’s per capita academic performance across all faculty members.

U of T, which ranked 24th in the 2023 edition of the ranking, was joined by two other Canadian universities in the top 100: the University of British Columbia (47th) and McGill University (74th).

The five highest ranked universities were Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley.

Overall, U of T continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

The ��Ƶ is rated first in Canada and 24th globally in the latest edition of ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s worldwide university rankings.

Among public universities, U of T placed sixth in North America and 13th overall in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released earlier this week.

This marks the seventh year in a row that U of T has placed among the world’s top 25 universities in the closely watched annual ranking, which was first launched in 2003.

“We are thrilled to see the ��Ƶ once again recognized as a world leader in research and education,” said Leah Cowen, vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“Our consistent performance in these and other worldwide rankings reflects U of T’s unwavering commitment to making new discoveries, advancing knowledge across disciplines and producing graduates who can effect change on a global scale.”

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is based on six weighted measures related to research and academic performance. They include: the number of alumni and faculty winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly-cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories; the number of papers published in the prestigious journals Nature and Science; articles cited in major science and social sciences citation indices; and each institution’s per capita academic performance.

In all, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy evaluated more than 2,500 universities to determine the 1,000 that would make the cut for its 2023 publication.

U of T received a similar score to last year but dropped two spots as the rising performance of Chinese universities saw Tsinghua University join the top 25 for the first time while Imperial College London, ranked 23rd, maintained its position.

The ranking’s top 10 universities were identical to 2022, with Harvard University taking the top spot in the ranking, followed by Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, the University of California, Berkeley, Princeton University, University of Oxford, Columbia University, the California Institute of Technology and University of Chicago.

Four other Canadian universities made the top 100: the University of British Columbia (44), McGill University (70), University of Alberta (91) and McMaster University (98).

The 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released this week, saw the ��Ƶ hold steady at 22^nd in the world among all universities, public and private, while remaining the top-ranked university in Canada.

U of T also ranked sixth among North America’s public universities and 11^th among public schools globally – the same position it held last year – in the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s latest world university rankings.

U of T continues to occupy its highest highest-ever position since the ranking was first launched in 2003.

The latest subject ranking by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy placed U of T in the top 10 globally in eight subjects: sociology (4^th); medical technology (6^th); psychology (7^th); pharmacy and pharmaceutical science (8^th); education (10^th); finance (10^th); public health (10^th); and statistics (10^th).

Moreover, U of T was among a handful of elite schools that ranked in the top 25 for 21 different subjects – an achievement matched only by the University of California, Berkeley, Harvard University, University of Michigan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, Stanford University and Tsinghua University.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022 also ranked U of T first in Canada in more subjects – 31 – than any other university in the country.

“We are immensely proud to see the ��Ƶ recognized for its expertise across such a diverse array of disciplines – a testament to the high quality of scholarship and research generated by our world-class faculty.” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

Now in its sixth year, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022 assessed more than 5,000 universities in 54 subject areas spanning the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

The rankings measure the performance of universities in terms of research output, quality and influence; international collaboration; and academic awards. Bibliometric data are used to develop the majority of indicators and are complemented with data on faculty honours and awards. Each subject has a different mix of indicator weightings and thresholds for inclusion, depending on the nature of the data being used.

In all, U of T ranked in 51 of the ShanghaiRanking’s 54 subject areas, up one from last year, and was the only university ranked among the world’s top 100 in 46 subjects. The university’s ranking moved up in 19 subjects, declined in 14 subjects and remained unchanged in 17 subjects.

U of T placed in the world’s top 50 in 32 subjects. Only five universities were ranked among the top 50 in more subjects – Harvard University, the University of Michigan, MIT, Stanford University and the University of Washington.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022 comes on the heels of U of T’s strong performance in another prestigious, subject-focused ranking – the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022. In the QS ranking, U of T placed first in Canada across all five subject areas and was the only university in the world to rank in the top 50 for 46 specific subjects.

The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy also produces the influential Academic Ranking of World Universities, the most recent edition of which saw U of T ranked Canada’s top university and 22^nd in the world.

The ��Ƶ has climbed one spot to 22^nd in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities, achieving its highest position globally since the ranking began in 2003.

The annual rankings by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy also saw U of T retain its position as Canada’s top university while ranking sixth among public universities in North America and 11^th among public universities globally.

The 2021 edition of the rankings looked at more than 2,000 universities around the world and assessed them based on research impact, quality of faculty and quality of education, among other measures.

The ��Ƶ has once again been ranked the top Canadian university and among the top 25 universities in the world in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The annual rankings by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy saw U of T move up one position to 23^rd overall while ranking seventh among North American public universities and 12^th among public universities globally.

U of T remained the top school in Canada in the 2020 edition of the ranking, which looks at more than 2,000 universities and is based on academic prowess, research impact and the quality of its faculty, as measured by an array of indicators.

“We are delighted to be ranked the top Canadian university and one of the top 25 universities in the world by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, recognized for its rigour and detail in assessing the research and academic qualities of post-secondary institutions,” said Cheryl Regehr, U of T’s vice-president and provost.

Compiled annually since 2003, the Academic Ranking of World Universities relies on six weighted measures to determine institutions’ academic and research performance. They include: the number of faculty and alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of papers published in the prestigious Nature and Science journals; papers cited in major citation indices; and the per capita performance of the institution.

The top five universities in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities were unchanged from last year, with Harvard University ranked first followed by Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, MIT and the University of California, Berkeley, in that order.

Three other Canadian universities were ranked in the top 100, with the University of British Columbia, McGill University and McMaster University placing 38^th, 78^th and 98^th respectively.

The ��Ƶ ranks among the top 10 universities in the world in subjects as diverse as psychology, finance and geography, according to the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The ranking, released this week by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, placed U of T in the top 10 in nine subject areas – two more than last year. In clinical medicine, U of T shot up to fifth from 15th; in geography, it moved up to fourth from 21st; and in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, it climbed to eighth from 37th.

The other subjects in which U of T placed in the top 10 were: psychology (2); medical technology (4); automation and control (5); sociology (6); public health (7); and finance (9).

Among Canadian universities, U of T tied or ranked first in 30 subjects, more than any other institution.

“These results recognize the ��Ƶ's excellence across a wide range of subjects,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“Our across-the-board strength facilitates interdisciplinary research and gives students in all fields the opportunity to work alongside world-class scholars.”

The prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities is based on five criteria, including scholarly paper output, citations and awards. The results take into account the number of papers produced by an institution, how many appear in top journals and citation impact as measured by actual citations versus the average number of citations in that field.

The ranking also considers awards and honours and gives weight to international collaboration. In the social sciences, there is less emphasis than in sciences and engineering on citation impact and international collaboration, and more weight on the total number of published papers.

Over 4,000 universities were ranked in a total of 54 subject areas.

U of T ranked in the top 50 across 35 subject areas globally, the same as the University of California, Berkeley and more than any other university apart from Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Michigan.

Overall, U of T moved up in the rankings in 17 subjects.

The latest ranking comes on the heels of the QS World University Rankings, which placed U of T first in Canada and 29th across 1,000 universities worldwide.

The ��Ƶ has once again been ranked No. 1 in Canada and among the top 25 universities in the world by a prestigious global ranking firm.

After moving up four places last year, U of T held onto its 23^rd-place ranking in the 2018 edition of the independent Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The global ranking of 500 universities is distilled from a list of about 1,500 institutions each year, and is based on academic and research performance.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized for the brilliance and hard work of our students and faculty,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

“These results demonstrate researchers at the ��Ƶ are leaders when it comes to answering the world’s most pressing questions and solving its biggest problems, from cancer to climate change.”

The Shanghai rankings, compiled every year since 2003, rely on six weighted indicators to determine an institution’s academic and research performance. They include: the number of faculty and alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of papers published in Nature and Science; papers cited in major citation indices; and the per capita performance of each institution.

Over the past 15 years, U of T has consistently been ranked by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy among the top 30 schools globally, reflecting its status as one of the world’s leading research-intensive universities.

The top university in the 2018 ranking was Harvard University – a position the U.S. school has occupied for the past 16 years. It was followed by Stanford University and the University of Cambridge, whose relative positions were unchanged from a year earlier.

Among Canadian universities, U of T was ranked first in the country followed by the University of British Columbia, which was ranked 43^rd globally, and McGill University, which was ranked 70^thglobally. Hamilton’s McMaster University was the only other Canadian university to rank in the top 100 globally, occupying the 86^th spot.

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy also produces a global ranking of universities by subject. Released last month, the Shanghai subject rankings placed U of T within the top 10 in the world in seven different subjects. They were: psychology (2), medical technology (4), human and biological sciences (6), automation and control (7), sociology (8), management (9) and public health (10).

U of T’s strong performance in the Shanghai rankings comes on the heels of a similarly impressive achievement last week in the National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking. Determined exclusively by the performance of scientific papers, the NTU ranking placed U of T fourth in the world behind only Harvard, Stanford and Johns Hopkins University.

U of T also ranked as the world’s top publicly funded university in the 2018 NTU tables – ahead of the University of Oxford, which ranked fifth.

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy also produces the influential Academic Ranking of World Universities.
