U of T was ranked 12th in the world and the number-one public university in North America in the magazine’s graduate Global Employability University Ranking 2023-2024, which surveys top employers to determine which universities produce graduates with the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.

The ranking evaluated 250 universities from 44 countries.

“The global demand for ��Ƶ graduates reflects the quality of the students we attract and the education we provide,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“Our faculty and staff equip students with the knowledge, experience and outlook needed to excel in their careers, drive innovation in their respective fields and make a positive impact in the world.”

Designed by HR consultancy Emerging, the ranking is based on a survey of recruiters and managers from leading companies, most of which have a workforce exceeding 500 employees. This year’s results were based on 100,700 votes cast by 11,560 participants, each of whom can select up to 10 universities.

U of T has consistently ranked among the top 15 globally in the Times Higher Education employability ranking over the past decade, and it held the 11th spot last year.

This year’s edition of the ranking was led by the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Four Canadian universities joined U of T in the top 100: McGill University (31st), University of British Columbia (36th), Université de Montréal (72nd) and McMaster University (85th).

Overall, U of T is ranked first in Canada and among the top 25 universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

The ��Ƶ is among the top five best global universities for fostering startups, says UBI Global, a Stockholm-based research and advisory firm that ranks top business incubators and accelerators.

“This is amazing news and an important recognition of the growing international status of our entrepreneurship community at U of T,” said Vivek Goel, vice-president of research and innovation.

“The breadth and depth of U of T’s research expertise coupled with the entrepreneurial talent, ideas and drive of our students and faculty has created a rich, dynamic environment to grow the next great global startups," he said.

In the past five years, the ��Ƶ has created more than 150 companies, generating more than $500 million in investment.

On Thursday, UBI Global ranked ��Ƶ Entrepreneurship among the world’s top five university-managed business incubators. This marks the first time the university has participated in the UBI ranking program, which produces its global benchmark report every two years.

The independent firm, which assessed almost 1,400 programs in 53 countries, announced the rankings in four categories in Toronto at the 2018 World Incubation Summit.

The news comes as U of T begins its second annual Entrepreneurship @ U of T Week on Monday. The week-long community celebration, which involves talks with business leaders and workshops for student entrepreneurs, culminates on Thursday, March 1 with the Startup Showcase, where members of the public can talk with U of T’s student entrepreneurs and see their innovative products firsthand.

“By highlighting the impact and performance of these programs, we are not only helping incubators and accelerators to become more efficient, but we are also assisting government officials in developing their respective innovation ecosystems,” said UBI Global CEO and co-founder Ali Amin in the statement.

“The benchmark and rankings also enable corporations to make informed partnership and investment decisions about the incubation programs and the startups they intend to engage with.”

Unlike most universities, U of T has nine startup incubators across its three campuses, which help foster student and researcher startups at all stages of development and in a wide variety of areas, from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to health-care innovations and mobile apps for consumers.

There are also 200 courses and programs available and the opportunity to attend countless events which attract more than 25,000 year student participants each year. The community also has new space for entrepreneurs to work, network and hold meetings at ONRamp, which opened last fall, as well as the state-of-the-art Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which will open soon.

“For such a large school, it just seems like everyone has this buy-in [for entrepreneurship] which you just don’t typically see,” said Gurinder (Gary) Sangha, a serial entrepreneur who recently joined U of T’s 22-member Entrepreneurship Leadership Council.

“It’s not a check-the-box, ‘we do this, too’ kind of thing. It’s very serious.”

U of T is leading university in Canada for employability for sixth year in a row

Even before graduation, Julianna Paprakis had her pick of job offers – enough, in fact, to say no to Google.

The ��Ƶ computer science graduate’s success on the job market is no anomaly. U of T grads are considered top candidates in the eyes of employers around the globe, a new university ranking suggests.

U of T came in 13^th in Times Higher Education’s global university employability ranking, up one place from last year. That puts U of T in a class with Ivy League schools and ahead of the University of Oxford and Berkeley.

The university has focused more on students' core competencies, says U of T President Meric Gertler. “We've made sure they communicate well, that they have an opportunity to work in teams. Those efforts are paying off,” he told the Globe and Mail.

U of T's performance may also be due to its high academic standards, he says. “While our students may not always appreciate that, it seems that employers do.”

Among public universities, U of T was first in North America and fifth in the world, behind the University of Cambridge, Technical University of Munich, University of Tokyo, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

For the sixth year running, U of T was the top Canadian institution on the list. The other Canadian universities that cracked the top 100 were McGill (18^th), the University of Montreal/HEC (44^th), the University of British Columbia (45^th) and McMaster (74^th).

The ranking was based on research by the German polling institute Trendence, which surveyed 6,000 firms on the topic of which universities produced the “best graduates in terms of employability.”

Paprakis credits U of T for helping her get a foot in the door for software and back-end engineering internships at TripAdvisor and Uken Games, a local games studio. She found both opportunities through a career fair on campus. “U of T is a big target for a lot of companies,” she says.

She worked long hours in university. Although she had a rule against pulling all-nighters, she sometimes got home at 2 a.m., only to start studying again at 6. She was rewarded for her hard work in school and internships when it came time to apply for jobs in her last semester.

She applied to seven or eight employers and received about four offers. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, offered her a job in New York City, but that was too far away from Paprakis’s family, friends and boyfriend in Toronto. Fortunately, she had options.

“I was waiting for SnapChat and they were the last ones to get back to me. They were the ones I was hoping the most for.”

Snap Inc., the technology and social media company behind SnapChat and Bitmoji, took her on as a software engineer at its Toronto office. She works on user interfaces for SnapChat, Bitmoji and internal tools, and conducts interviews to help with hiring.

U of T’s results in the Times Higher Education employability ranking mirror its performance in another independent study. The 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings put U of T 15^th, up from 19^th last year, in a survey of 600 top universities. U of T was once again head of the pack among Canadian universities.

“We’re pleased to see U of T’s excellent track record for graduate outcomes and employment continue to be recognized,” says Cheryl Regehr, U of T’s vice-president and provost. “And we’re extremely proud of our undergraduate and graduate students and the success they achieve after graduation.”

For Tony Liang, a U of T education in electrical and computer engineering, from a bachelor’s degree to PhD, was his ticket to getting a job at SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk that aims to colonize Mars. Liang, who graduated in 2015, is an antenna engineer and helps design satellites at SpaceX’s office in Redmond, Wash., near Seattle. He is working on complex phased array antennae for satellites that would provide fast global internet coverage.

“Even though I’m down in the States, here they know the name ��Ƶ,” he says. In his area, electromagnetics, the university has professors who are recognized as leaders in the field, including George Eleftheriades, a pioneer in metamaterials.

“My supervisor Sean Hum has active research on reflectarrays, which is something often used in space applications. That bodes well with a company like SpaceX.”

Liang’s bachelor’s degree gave him a solid grounding in electrical engineering, he says.

“It’s all about fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. And it really shows when someone has that versus someone who doesn’t.”

The ��Ƶ ranks 13th in the world for psychology – in the company of elite American and British universities – in the Times Higher Education’s latest university rankings by subject.

Times Higher Education (THE) ranks universities in 11 subject areas, but the company is only releasing a few subject results at a time. Rankings for psychology, life sciences, and clinical health were released today.

In psychology, U of T ranked ahead of Columbia University and New York University but three spots below the University of British Columbia – the other Canadian institution in the top 20. Stanford University took the top spot. In comparison to other public universities, U of T's results are even more impressive: The university placed 7^th in psychology worldwide.

In the life sciences category, which covers agriculture, forestry, biological sciences, veterinary science and sport science, the university held steady at 22 – although the number of schools ranked by THE this year grew to 500 from 100. U of T is in the top 10 in this category when excluding private universities.

And in “clinical, pre-clinical and health,” which includes medicine and dentistry, U of T was once again the only Canadian university among the top 20, along with top international universities like Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. U of T was 19^th, down five spots since the rankings were expanded.

Nicholas Rule, acting chair of the psychology department in the Faculty of Arts & Science, wasn't surprised to see U of T recognized as a world leader in the field, based on quality of teaching, research and other criteria across many departments. Psychology encompasses a range of sub-specialties, including educational, sport and clinical psychology.

“U of T was the capital on the map for decades in terms of understanding human memory – and that’s still an area where we have tremendous strengths,” he says.

In his undergraduate studies in the U.S., Rule was introduced to the ideas of University Professor Emeritus Fergus Craik and Professor Emeritus Endel Tulving, who did seminal work on different types of memory, including episodic memory (remembering particular events) and semantic memory (remembering generally what things are or do).

Their work is so fundamental “that we almost take it for granted now because it’s so basic to what’s developed since,” Rule says.

In recent years, the department has built on its strengths and expanded into computational cognitive neuroscience – applying mathematical models to understanding how the brain works, especially in perception and memory.

At Amy Finn's lab in Sidney Smith Hall, researchers look at how brain development affects learning.

“Brain structures don't develop at the same rate, with some developing earlier than others,” explains Finn, an assistant professor in the department of psychology. “The two neural systems that I focus heavily on underlie what we call procedural memory (or implicit memory, “knowing how”) and declarative memory (explicit or verbalizable memory “knowing what”),” she says. “The procedural form appears to mature earlier.

“Current studies are looking at what this means for the ways in which children learn all kinds of information differently.”

Some of her research may help answer the perplexing question: Why do children have an easier time than adults learning a new language? In one study, she and her co-authors found that the harder adults tried to learn an artificial language, the worse they were at understanding its structure. She suggests that adults' more developed cognitive skills may actually impede learning language, especially when it comes to picking up on nuances and exceptions.

Computer science, engineering and technology at the ��Ƶ are ranked among the best in the world in the latest prestigious subject rankings released today by Times Higher Education (THE).

U of T placed 22^nd in computer science among 300 universities surveyed worldwide, and 29^th in engineering and technology out of 500 universities, THE reported. The rankings are based on 13 individual performance indicators such as teaching, citations and research volume and reputation.

Stanford University was the top university in both subjects, with U of T among the top 20 publicly funded universities in the world in both subjects.

“Every year, our scholars produce cutting-edge research and innovations in just about every subject area imaginable,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “Once again, we’re pleased to see the ��Ƶ’s research prowess reflected in the Times Higher Education subject rankings, this time in computer science, engineering and technology.”

U of T was also the top Canadian university in both subjects, followed by University of British Columbia (28^th), University of Waterloo (33^rd), University of Montreal (56^th) and McGill University (95^th) in the global top 100 in computer science. In engineering and technology, U of T was joined in the top 100 by UBC (62^nd), McGill (71^st) and Waterloo (83^rd).

THE ranks universities in 11 subject areas, but the company is only releasing a few subject results at a time. Earlier this fall, THE ranked U of T 10^th in the world in law, 11^th in education, 22^nd in business and economics, 27^th in social sciences and 15^th in arts & humanities (which includes art, performing arts, languages, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology subjects).

Overall, the ��Ƶ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

Stellar research drives performance

The ��Ƶ has once again nabbed fourth place in the 2017 National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking – following Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Stanford universities.

It remains the world’s top public university for a fourth year, ahead of Oxford University, which placed fifth overall.

The NTU ranking focuses solely on analyzing scientific papers of the top 500 universities based on research productivity, research impact and research excellence.

“These results once again demonstrate the impact of the ��Ƶ’s stellar research across a wide range of disciplines,” said Vivek Goel, vice-president of research and innovation. “We’re proud to see the excellent work of our faculty and students being recognized globally.

“As the Fundamental Science Review highlights, this kind of research is essential for building an innovative, thriving society – and we’ll keep working with partners across Canada and around the world to ensure this ground-breaking work continues.”

Since 2007, the university has ranked between third and 14^th in the world and consistently first in Canada. Two other Canadian universities ranked in the top 50 this year: UBC (27^th) and McGill (36^th).

In addition to the overall ranking, the NTU Ranking also analyzed research for six field-specific rankings and 14 subject-specific rankings.

In rankings by field, U of T placed third in the world in clinical medicine, sixth in social sciences and eighth in life sciences. In engineering, it ranked 50^th. In the subject-specific rankings, U of T also performed well, placing first in Canada in seven out of 14 subjects. U of T placed fourth internationally in pharmacology and toxicology, 26^th in electrical engineering and 30^th in physics.

The ��Ƶ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

Last month, Times Higher Education (THE) ranked U of T 22^ndoverall out of 980 universities worldwide.

University ranked among top 30 public institutions worldwide by Reuters

The ��Ƶ is Canada’s most innovative university, according to an independent survey of top global post-secondary institutions by media giant Reuters.

Known as the Reuters Top 100, the ranking “aims to identify and rank the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries,” the company said in a news release Wednesday.

U of T ranked 46^th overall – up 11 spots from last year’s showing – with Stanford University, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, coming in first place for the third consecutive year. The University of British Columbia, in 58^th spot, was the only other Canadian university to rank.

U of T was also among the top 30 publicly funded universities.

“We’re pleased to see the work of the brilliant students and researchers at the ��Ƶ recognized for their ability to publish globally important, cutting-edge research, as well as to patent and commercialize their discoveries to help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

In fact, U of T submits a U.S. patent application at a rate greater than one per week with the help of its Innovations & Partnerships Office (IPO), and its researchers have published papers that are among the most cited and influential in the world on a range of subjects, Goel said.

The university has a robust entrepreneurship ecosystem, with programs, events and incubators, that is enabling students and faculty to learn how to take an idea or years of research and form a company. Last week, the university officially opened ONRamp, a new collaborative workspace for entrepreneurs and startups for U of T and other Ontario universities.

In a break from other recent rankings that noted the rise of Asian universities, Reuters said their research shows that “anyone looking to find the most influential research leading to the most transformative technologies should look west, not east.”

North American universities dominated the Reuters Top 100 list, with 51 universities placing, followed by Europe with 26, Asia with 20 and the Middle East with three.

The ranking process examined approximately 600 global organizations, such as educational institutions, non-profits and government-funded labs that publish the most academic research. Each was then evaluated and ranked using 10 different metrics, including published academic papers and patent filings, an indication of its ability to commercialize its discoveries.

Globally in-demand graduates, alumni in leadership roles and high levels of engagement with employers are just some of the reasons the ��Ƶ has one of the best graduate employability outcomes in the world, says a new independent study.

U of T is the top-ranked Canadian university and 15^th in the world – up from 19^th last year – in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings, which surveyed 600 top global universities in its annual report released Tuesday.

The 15^th placement means U of T is among the top three per cent in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings. Among public universities, the ��Ƶ ranked third in North America (just behind UCLA and UC Berkeley) and 10^th globally.

“Students at the ��Ƶ have the opportunity to learn from some of the top minds in their field and then hone their skills in real-world settings. Undergraduate and graduate students engage in experiential learning opportunities with a variety of university partners, from community agencies to startups to international companies,” said Cheryl Regehr, U of T’s vice-president and provost.

“We’re pleased to see our ranking results continue to demonstrate U of T’s excellent track record for graduate outcomes and employment.”

In compiling this year’s ranking, QS used a methodology to rate each university based on its reputation with employers, alumni outcomes, partnerships with employers per faculty, employer-student connections and graduate employment rate.

Overall, Quacquarelli Symonds Limited considered responses from more than 30,000 employers, mapped the degrees and affiliations of more than 30,000 high-achievers, considered 130,000 employers' connections with graduates and evaluated more than 200,000 work placement partnerships.

In addition to U of T, four other Canadian institutions made the list of the top 100 ranked, including University of Waterloo (24^th), University of British Columbia (35^th), McGill University (42^nd) and University of Alberta (94^th).
