Martin's&nbsp;talk, at U of T's <a href="http://learn.utoronto.ca/">School of Continuing Studies</a>,&nbsp;covered a wide range of topics including the residential school system, the history of forced assimilation and the current state of education for Canada’s Inuit, Metis and First Nations.</p> <p> Through inadequate funding and program development, Martin&nbsp;said, Canada still provides educational opportunities to aboriginal elementary and secondary school children that are inferior to the provincial school systems.&nbsp;</p> <p> “The province spends $15,000 per student in Northern Ontario,” said Martin. “The federal government provides an on-reserve school 10 miles away with $7,500 to educate each student. So we are underfunding kids on reservations by about 50 per cent.&nbsp;</p> <p> “This means those schools can’t afford to get teachers; they don’t have programs for kids with disabilities.<span style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">”</span></p> <p> A huge change is required in the way that education is delivered, said Martin. &nbsp;</p> <p> “Clearly, our attempts to tell aboriginals what their education system should look like have not worked. And the fact is that the time has come for us to listen to these communities as to what they think needs to happen.&nbsp;</p> <p> “If we listen, if we talk to each other, the problems that I’ve talked about with aboriginal education in Canada can be solved.”&nbsp;</p> <p> Martin’s visit&nbsp;included an extended question-and-answer session and was organized by the School of Continuing Studies as part of the School’s <a href="http://learn.utoronto.ca/courses-programs/arts-science/courses/university-lecture-series">University Lecture Series</a>. The long-running program exposes learners to critical analysis, provocative ideas and thoughtful insights from leading experts tackling a range of topics in history, art, politics, religion, health and public affairs.&nbsp;</p> <p> <a href="https://storify.com/UofTLearnMore/rt-hon-paul-martin-visits-the-school-of-continuing">Read the collected tweets</a> from Martin’s talk. &nbsp;</p> <p> <em>Alison Terpenning is a writer with the School of Continuing Studies at the Ƶ.</em></p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-picpath field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">picpath</div> <div class="field__item">sites/default/files/2014-11-07-paul-martin.jpg</div> </div> Mon, 10 Nov 2014 09:26:23 +0000 sgupta 6621 at Making an impact at home and abroad /news/making-impact-home-and-abroad <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Making an impact at home and abroad</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>sgupta</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2014-04-11T09:01:02-04:00" title="Friday, April 11, 2014 - 09:01" class="datetime">Fri, 04/11/2014 - 09:01</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item">Participants in the international leadership development program (photo courtesy the School of Continuing Studies)</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/alison-terpenning" hreflang="en">Alison Terpenning</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-legacy field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author legacy</div> <div class="field__item">Alison Terpenning</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/more-news" hreflang="en">More News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/school-continuing-studies" hreflang="en">School of Continuing Studies</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/international" hreflang="en">International</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/education" hreflang="en">Education</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/china" hreflang="en">China</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/global" hreflang="en">Global</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">International leadership development program at School of Continuing Studies</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>When the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China wanted to strengthen its global talent pool, it looked across the globe to the <a href="http://learn.utoronto.ca/">Ƶ School of Continuing Studies</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>“What I learned at the U of T School of Continuing Studies is to think more creatively,” said <strong>Richard Jia</strong>, who spent nine months in Toronto as a part of the School’s international leadership development program.</p> <p>“It allowed me to look at business with a different perspective.”</p> <p>Jia is just one of more than 100 participants from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China who’ve taken part in the multi-faceted program, recently recognized by the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. The award for international program of excellence was handed out in Miami in late March, and recognizes an educational program that is engaged in activities that promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas of global significance.</p> <p>“The award offers great validation for the success of this international partnership with ICBC and the School of Continuing Studies,” said <strong>Sherry Yuan Hunter</strong>, director of the ILDP.</p> <p>Created to provide professional development for ICBC’s future global leaders, ILDP offers comprehensive education opportunities that range from wealth management to arts. Participants are also able to strengthen their English language proficiency and develop an understanding of Canadian culture through networking activities with the Toronto business community and a workplace experience.&nbsp;</p> <p>“The course content is very rich and includes leadership, strategy and assignments designed to learn public speaking, collaboration and to teach us to think independently,” says <strong>Tony Dong</strong>, current class representative and senior product manager with ICBC.</p> <p><strong>Amy Jia</strong>, deputy division head with ICBC says the program helps develop critical thinking.</p> <p>“Management can be seen as about being aggressive, but now I can think about my own nature and develop my own style,” she said. “Thinking about creating my own approach has given me a lot of confidence.”&nbsp;</p> <p>The opportunities to learn go beyond the classroom and include rich interactions with dedicated instructors, participants said.</p> <p>"Our mentors invite us to dinner, Remembrance Day observance, Halloween, Santa Claus Parade, Nuit Blanche and other Toronto events,” said Dong.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Judy Liu</strong>, another current program participant, adds that “instructors are very passionate and really care about our progress, and really listen to us and our problems.
