The research-focused 2024-2025 Best Global Universities Rankings placed U of T 10th among public universities worldwide and fifth among public institutions in North America

The ��Ƶ has been ranked 17^th in the world, up one spot from last year, in the latest global university ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2024-25 edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, which focuses on research performance, also placed U of T 10^th among public universities worldwide and fifth among all public institutions in North America.

U of T remained Canada’s top-ranked university in the closely watched international ranking.

“This latest ranking positions the ��Ƶ among a small group of elite institutions that are making important new discoveries and generating critical new knowledge across a range of fields,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“Our researchers and scholars can take pride in this recognition of the impact they are having on a global scale.”

Using data from Clarivate Analytics, U.S. News & World Report assessed 2,250 universities through the lens of research performance, as measured by indicators such as global and regional reputations, citations, scholarly publications, international collaboration and citation impact.

U of T ranked among the top 10 universities in the world in eight subject areas: clinical medicine (third), endocrinology and metabolism (third), cardiac and cardiovascular systems (fourth), surgery (fourth), arts and humanities (fifth), social sciences and public health (fifth), oncology (eighth) and psychiatry/psychology (ninth).

Among Canadian schools, U of T ranked first in a total of 28 different subjects.

This year’s ranking included four new subject areas – bringing the total to 51 subjects – and covered an additional 250 schools.

Two other Canadian universities joined U of T among the top 100 globally in the most recent U.S. News & World Report ranking: the University of British Columbia, which ranked 39^th, and McGill University at 56^th.

The top five universities globally in this year’s ranking were: Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford and the University of California, Berkeley.

U of T also ranked first in Canada, second among North American public universities and among the top 25 institutions globally in the QS World University Rankings released in early June.

Overall, U of T continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and among the top 25 universities globally in the five most closely watched international rankings: QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

The ��Ƶ has risen one spot to 16^th globally in the latest U.S. News & World Report university ranking.

The 2022 edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, which are focused on research performance, placed U of T first in Canada and 16^th in the world – a position it shared this year with Princeton University and University College London. That continues U of T’s upward trajectory in the ranking from the previous year when it moved into 17^th position globally, up one spot from a year earlier.

Among public universities, U of T continues to be ranked fifth in North America and seventh globally.

“We’re very pleased that once again U.S. News & World Report has recognized the ��Ƶ among the world’s very best research universities,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“I would like to congratulate our exceptional faculty, librarians, staff and students for their contributions to world-leading, innovative research across a wide range of disciplines. They are playing a key role in developing new knowledge and tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”

U of T was also ranked among the top 10 universities globally in 13 subject areas: surgery (3^rd); endocrinology and metabolism (4^th); cardiac and cardiovascular systems (5^th); clinical medicine (5^th); oncology (5^th); psychiatry/psychology (8^th); arts and humanities (9^th); gastroenterology and hepatology (9^th); molecular biology and genetics (9^th); public, environmental and occupational health (9^th); radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging (9^th); biology and biochemistry (10^th); and social sciences and public health (10^th).

In addition, U of T was ranked first in Canada in 30 of the 43 subject areas covered in the ranking.

The U.S. News & World Report ranking assessed 1,750 universities across 90 countries through the lens of research performance, as measured by indicators such as global and regional reputations, citations, scholarly publications, international collaboration and citation impact. Data was obtained from Clarivate Analytics.

The methodology used to compile the rankings was identical to last year’s ranking, with the exception that the most recent edition featured the addition of five new subject areas.

Two other Canadian schools joined U of T among the top 100 globally in the most recent ranking: the University of British Columbia, which ranked 35^th, and McGill University, which ranked 51^st.

The top five universities in the 2022 edition of the ranking were Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Oxford.

The ��Ƶ has climbed one spot to 17^th globally in the latest U.S. News & World Report ranking.

The 2021 edition of the research-focused Best Global Universities Rankings placed U of T first in Canada and 17^thin the world, continuing an upward climb from the previous year when U of T moved into 18^th position from 20^th.

Among public universities, U of T ranked seventh globally – up one spot from last year – and fifth in North America.

“I’m delighted that the ��Ƶ continues to be ranked among the top 20 universities in the world by U.S. News and World Report,” said U of T President Meric Gertler. “U of T’s consistently strong performance in these and other rankings is testament to our research excellence across a diverse array of fields, from medicine and life sciences to the arts, humanities and social sciences.

U of T’s strong performance in the U.S. News & World Report ranking comes on the heels of the recent National Taiwan University Ranking – another research-focused ranking – that ranked U of T third in the world, up one spot from a year earlier. In September, Times Higher Education ranked U of T 18th globally in its closely watched World University Rankings.

In addition to the overall ranking, U.S. News & World Report ranked U of T first in Canada in 30 of 38 subject areas. The ��Ƶ has climbed two spots to 18^th in the world in the latest U.S. News & World Report global university rankings.

The 2020 edition of the research-focused Best Global Universities Rankings, released this week, saw U of T move to 18^th place from the 20^th spot last year. Among public universities, U of T ranked eighth in the world and remains the number one post-secondary institution in Canada.

Outside of the United States, U of T was ranked third overall, behind only the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

U of T also ranked first in Canada in 20 out of 28 subject areas examined by the U.S. media company, and was among the top 10 schools in the world for: oncology (3^rd); clinical medicine (4^th); surgery (4^th); arts and humanities (6^th); cardiac and cardiovascular systems (8^th) psychiatry/psychology (9^th); and social sciences and public health (10^th).

“This is a terrific result for the ��Ƶ that underscores our growing global reputation for research excellence in fields that span humanities to health care,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

The U.S. News & World Report ranking evaluated more than 1,500 post-secondary institutions from 81 countries based on research performance and reputation. Using data from Clarivate Analytics, the ranking measured global and regional reputations, citations, scholarly publications and international collaboration. A similar methodology was used to rank top universities in a total of 28 subject areas.

U of T’s performance in the U.S. News & World Report ranking comes on the heels of a September ranking by Times Higher Education that saw U of T jump three spots to 18^th globally. U of T also moved up three spots to 19^th globally in a reputation-focused ranking released by Times Higher Education in late July.

In addition to U of T, the latest ranking by U.S. News & World Report placed two other Canadian schools among its top 50 globally: the University of British Columbia, which ranked 30^th in the world, and McGill University, which ranked 49^th.

The top five universities in the U.S. News & World Report ranking were Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley and Oxford.

This year’s ranking included six new subject areas and covered an additional 250 schools.

The ��Ƶ has once again been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the number one school in Canada and among the top 10 public universities in the world.

With a focus on research output and reputation, the Washington, D.C.-based news and information firm’s 2019 Best Global Universities ranking shows U of T holding on to the same 20^th-place position globally among both public and private institutions that it occupied last year.

U of T was also ranked first in Canada in 17 of 22 subject areas U.S. News & World Report evaluated. That includes four subject categories where U of T ranked among the top ten globally: clinical medicine (5^th), psychiatry and psychology (8^th), molecular biology and genetics (10^th) and arts and humanities (10^th).

“We’re proud to see the ��Ƶ recognized for its world-renowned research and commitment to academic excellence,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“The university’s consistent strength across a wide range of disciplines opens doors to new knowledge and discoveries, and offers students a unique opportunity to study alongside top scholars regardless of their chosen field.”

The U.S. News & World Report 2019 Best Global Universities ranking, which uses data from Clarivate Analytics, is designed to provide insight into how universities compare internationally based on their research performance. To do that, the organization looked at 1,250 institutions in 75 countries and ranked them using a mix of reputational standing and data based on research publications and citations.

Both the University of British Columbia and McGill University joined U of T in the ranking’s top 100 this year, with UBC taking 29^th spot and McGill 43^rd.

The top three universities in the 2019 global ranking, meanwhile, were Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

While U.S. News & World Report has been ranking American universities for three decades, the creation of a separate global ranking five years ago was meant to address the increasingly borderless nature of post-secondary education and help benchmark U.S. schools against their international peers.

“Higher education continues to be more global, meaning that prospective students are looking beyond universities in their country when thinking about where to enroll,” Anita Narayan, U.S. News & World Report’s managing editor of education, said in a statement accompanying the ranking’s release.

As a leading Canadian university with a global outlook, U of T earlier this year announced that international PhD students would pay tuition equivalent to their domestic counterparts. The move was designed help U of T compete for the best scholars and remove barriers to international applicants, who bring new perspectives to U of T’s research apparatus and help to build the university’s worldwide network.

Ranked among top ten public universities in the world, top seven in North America

A top-notch reputation for research and prolific academic output has propelled the ��Ƶ into the top 20 of global universities, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report ranking.

The 2018 Best Global Universities rankings, released today by the Washington, D.C.-based news and information company, placed U of T in the top 10 of public universities and 20^th in the world overall – up one spot from last year. Among North America’s public universities, U of T ranked seventh.

That places U of T in a rarefied group of American and British universities, which, along with U of T, represent the very best of 1,250 schools ranked this year across 74 countries.

“The ��Ƶ has long prided itself on its commitment to fundamental research across a broad range of disciplines,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

“This latest ranking is more confirmation U of T truly is among the world’s leading post-secondary institutions when it comes to making important discoveries and creating new knowledge.”

U of T also ranked in the top 10 or higher in several subject specific rankings. They include arts and humanities, clinical medicine, psychiatry/psychology and space science.

Subjects where U of T found itself in the top 20 of global schools also include biology and biochemistry, economics and business, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behaviour, pharmacology and toxicology, and social sciences and public health.

Two other Canadian universities made the top 100 in the rankings. The University of British Columbia ranked 27^th, while McGill University was 49^th.

Harvard University remained the top-ranked university globally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The ��Ƶ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and NTU Ranking.

Earlier this month, U of T was ranked fourth in the world in the NTU Ranking.

And earlier in the year, Times Higher Education (THE) ranked U of T 22^nd overall out of 980 universities worldwide, while U of T moved up four spots to 23^rd internationally in the Shanghai Ranking’s annual Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and up one place to 31^st in the QS World University Rankings.

Once again, U of T's track record in research plays a major role

Stellar, cutting-edge research output and impact have placed the ��Ƶ 10th among public universities in the world and 21st overall in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of best global universities.

“Creating new knowledge is at the core of our mission at the ��Ƶ,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “It’s exciting for all of us to see our research leadership in a number of critically important fields, from the arts and humanities to social sciences, genetics and space science, once again be recognized by our peers.”

Only five non-U.S. universities made it into the top 25, all from Britain except for U of T, which was once again the top-ranked Canadian university and one of only a handful of institutions that excel across a breadth of disciplines.

U.S. News & World Report ranked U of T in the top 20 for 10 of its 22 subjects, including a top showing of sixth in the world for U of T’s arts and humanities work and seventh in clinical medicine.

For the 2016 results, the Washington, D.C.-based publisher evaluated 1,000 institutions spread across 65 countries – up from 750 last year – on 12 indicators, measuring academic research performance, and global and regional reputations.

The indicators included citations (50 per cent), research reputation (25 per cent), publications (15 per cent) and international collaboration (10 per cent).

Harvard University secured the No. 1 spot. Two other Canadian universities made the top global 100.

Along with the overall rankings, U of T also performed well in the subject rankings.
