A rock-solid academic reputation – recognized by employers and scholars around the world – has again propelled the ��Ƶ to the upper tier of top global universities.

At 28^th – up three spots from last year – U of T is among the top global universities surveyed in the prestigious QS World University Rankings for 2019, published by global higher education company Quacquarelli Symonds. MIT landed in first place again this year.

Compared to other public universities on the list, U of T placed even higher at 16^th in the world and third in North America behind Michigan (20^th) and University of California, Berkeley (27^th).

Last week, U of T was ranked 22^nd in the world by Times Higher Education based on the strength of its university brand.

“The ��Ƶ community is thankful for the recognition from our research peers and business leaders around the globe across such a wide range of subject areas,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

“It’s clear they see the tremendous value of hiring graduates with a U of T degree and in partnering with our researchers in the pursuit of critically important knowledge. It's rare to have such breadth and depth of scholarship in one institution. This ensures our students have the best and broadest learning opportunities with leading scholars."

The ��Ƶ was again the top ranked Canadian post-secondary institution by QS, followed by McGill (33^rd) and UBC (44^th) in the top 100.

QS bases its ranking system on six criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students.

When it comes to academic reputation alone, U of T ranked 18^th in the world, QS reported. The university also has a solid reputation among employers, ranking 35^th, and made strides in its rankings for international students.

Overall, the ��Ƶ continues to be the highest ranked Canadian university and one of the top ranked public universities in the five principal international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University. U of T is also among only a handful of global universities to be highly ranked across all fields.

The ��Ƶ again ranks among the best global universities when it comes to reputation, according to the Times Higher Education’s World Reputation Rankings 2017.

To compile the ranking, THE asked scholars to name universities they believe are the best for research and teaching, based on their own experience.

U of T is once again the top Canadian university and placed 24th globally. University of British Columbia and McGill University were 40th and 42nd respectively. Harvard was first overall.

Of the top global institutions, U of T ranked even higher among publicly funded universities, placing 13th in the world – and fourth among North American public universities.

“We’re delighted the ��Ƶ remains among the top 25 universities globally in recognition of our continuing strong reputation for our teaching and research,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “But in order to maintain our competitiveness, we need to keep investing in Canadian universities, particularly in funding cutting-edge global research.”

Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings for Times Higher Education, said North American universities “will need to ensure they maintain their reputation as the higher education landscape becomes increasingly competitive.”

In April, a nine-member panel – chaired by U of T President Emeritus David Naylor – conducted a review of the Government of Canada’s support for fundamental science. Canadian researchers have rallied around the report’s 35 recommendations, particularly the panel’s call for a $1.3-billion boost in federal research funding over four years.

Recently, U of T placed 18th among the world’s top public universities and 31st overall among top global universities in the 2018 QS World University Ranking.

Applications from international students have increased at universities across Canada – and at U of T, applications from American students are up almost 80 per cent, The Washington Post reports.

Ted Sargent, U of T's vice-president, international, told the Post that international applicants cite U of T's academic excellence – its ranking as one of the best universities in the world and among the top five public institutions globally – and the sense that studying abroad, and at U of T specifically, will enhance their ability to get a job.

Many also like that the university and the country are so global, the Post reported Monday.

“A lot of people know that half of the people in Toronto were not born in Canada,” Sargent told the Post. “Canada is a place that is focused on attracting talent from around the world.”

The university has long signaled that its doors were open to the world, Sargent said. “That messaging about diversity and inclusivity is very resonant today.”

The Post story also highlighted the personal experiences of a number of students from the United States. Rebekah Robinson, a high school senior from Maryland, told the Post that, as an African American, she was drawn to Toronto for its academic reputation and climate, as well as the diversity in the city. Andrew Hong, a 17-year-old from New Jersey, told the Post he was eager to come to Toronto next fall, to study artificial intelligence at a top-ranked university. The tuition isn’t high compared to many U.S. schools, and the exchange rate makes it particularly affordable, he said.

The article also featured Brown University PhD student Khaled Almilaji, who has been stranded in Turkey since the Trump travel ban in January and is considering coming to U of T. His wife is pregnant with their first child and still in Rhode Island. The Syrian citizen was working on a master’s in public health at Brown when his visa was revoked during the first U.S. travel ban while he was on a research trip to Turkey. The ��Ƶ has offered him a scholarship.

“If I don’t get the visa, I’ll be in Canada,” he told The Washington Post.

The New York Times also explored the impact of the Trump travel ban on Canadian universities, in an article published on March 24.

“Many Canadian universities are seeing a sharp increase in international student applications while foreign applications to many colleges in the United States have declined,” The Times reported.

The Times said U of T recorded a “stunning 80 percent leap in applications from the United States in the 12-month period ending in March,” compared with the same period a year earlier.

“The ��Ƶ’s trends are the opposite of those found among 250 American colleges surveyed last month by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers,” the article said.

“While the survey reported 26 percent of United States schools surveyed saw a decline in applications from India and 39 percent saw a decline in those from the Middle East, the ��Ƶ has seen a 60 percent increase in applications from India and a 54 percent increase from the United Arab Emirates alone,” the Times reported.

The ��Ƶ is the only Canadian institution to break into T imes Higher Education's first-ever analysis of top universities working with the world's most innovative companies.

The study, which examined universities that have co-authored the most papers with organizations on the Top 100 Global Innovators, ranked U of T 18th in the world, the only Canadian university on the list.

Using the Web of Science database for papers published since 1980, THE found U of T had published 513 papers with 25 top companies identified among Clarivate Analytics’ list of the Top 100 Global Innovators. That list includes global heavyweights in a number of fields such as 3M, Apple, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Honda, Merck, Symantec and Xerox.

“We’re extremely proud to see U of T recognized for the quality of its research and its collaborative partnerships with some of the world’s top innovative companies,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “U of T is consistently named the top Canadian university and ranked among the top 10 global public universities by international surveys, and these latest results underscore the excellence and global impact of our faculty and students’ research.”

U of T is known for its culture of innovation, research partnerships that span the globe, a diverse array of collaborations with private sector and public sector organizations and a vibrant entrepreneurship culture supported by a network of campus-linked accelerators and incubators, Goel said.

The THE survey placed U of T one notch ahead of Johns Hopkins University and four above the University of Cambridge. The results are even more impressive when looking only at public universities: U of T falls within the top 15 public institutions in the world when it comes to research partnerships with the world's most innovative firms.

The survey found that U of T's collaborative papers had a citation impact of 2.79, compared to a world average of 1.0.

Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, home of Philips and other multinational headquartered firms, placed first.

U of T has done well in 2016-2017 in several international rankings, consistently ranking among the top 10 global public universities:

Students who graduate from the ��Ƶ not only learn from some of the top minds in the world, they also have one of the best graduate employability outcomes in the world, says the QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

U of T was the top-ranked Canadian university and placed 19th globally out of 300 top universities surveyed. Among public universities, it ranked third in North America and 13th globally.

“We’re pleased to see our ranking results continue to demonstrate U of T’s excellent track record for graduate outcomes and employment,” said Cheryl Regehr, U of T’s vice-president and provost.

QS said that the ranking incorporates the views of employers through a global survey, as well as alumni outcomes, employment rates, industry partnerships and student-employer connections.

“The ranking aims to help prospective students identify institutions with a strong commitment to and outstanding outcomes on graduate employability,” QS said.

There was also a notably strong performance for STEM-focused institutions in the rankings, QS found. American universities fared well with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the top two positions. England, China, France and Australia also had institutions in the top 10.

Other Canadian universities in the top 50 included: Waterloo (22nd), McGill (28th), and UBC (41st).

The QS findings mirror the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) – Global Employability University Ranking that placed U of T first among Canadian universities, 14th in the world and sixth among North American public universities. The THE ranking combines the results of two online survey panels with approximately 6,000 respondents in total.

If you want to know which Canadian university has the best reputation among business leaders, guidance counsellors and fellow professors, the answer is the ��Ƶ, Maclean's says.

For its annual ranking of Canada’s top institutions of higher learning, the storied magazine conducted a cross-country reputational survey, which placed U of T in the No.1 spot.

The influencers participating in the survey also named a U of T degree as the “highest quality” of all universities surveyed in Canada and its students as the No.1 “leaders of tomorrow.” The university also placed second in the most innovative university category.

Regularly named the top Canadian university and among the top 10 global public universities by international surveys – including this week’s U.S. News & World Report rankings – U of T placed second overall in the Maclean's medical doctoral category, which ranked universities with a broad range of PhD programs and research, as well as medical schools. Other schools in the category included McGill University, the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Alberta.

“Canada is fortunate to have a number of strong universities. We’re proud that the value of a ��Ƶ degree and the experience of our students learning from some of the top minds in the world is one of the reasons we consistently rank among the very best in the world,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

To compile results for its 26th annual survey, Maclean's used five factors (students, faculty, resources, student support and reputation) based on 14 performance indicators. Each indicator was allocated a weight percentage. For example, reputation was worth 15 per cent of the overall score, while nine per cent was allocated to library services and resources.

In addition to its reputation survey results, U of T was also at the top in faculty awards, medical and science grants, citations and total research dollars.

The magazine’s methodology differs from global rankings. It highly weights input measures and focuses more on undergraduate student measures.

Once again, U of T's track record in research plays a major role

Stellar, cutting-edge research output and impact have placed the ��Ƶ 10th among public universities in the world and 21st overall in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of best global universities.

“Creating new knowledge is at the core of our mission at the ��Ƶ,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “It’s exciting for all of us to see our research leadership in a number of critically important fields, from the arts and humanities to social sciences, genetics and space science, once again be recognized by our peers.”

Only five non-U.S. universities made it into the top 25, all from Britain except for U of T, which was once again the top-ranked Canadian university and one of only a handful of institutions that excel across a breadth of disciplines.

U.S. News & World Report ranked U of T in the top 20 for 10 of its 22 subjects, including a top showing of sixth in the world for U of T’s arts and humanities work and seventh in clinical medicine.

For the 2016 results, the Washington, D.C.-based publisher evaluated 1,000 institutions spread across 65 countries – up from 750 last year – on 12 indicators, measuring academic research performance, and global and regional reputations.

The indicators included citations (50 per cent), research reputation (25 per cent), publications (15 per cent) and international collaboration (10 per cent).

Harvard University secured the No. 1 spot. Two other Canadian universities made the top global 100.

Along with the overall rankings, U of T also performed well in the subject rankings.

The ��Ƶ ranks fourth in the world, behind Harvard, Stanford and Johns Hopkins universities, according to the 2016 National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU).

It’s the top-ranked public university in the ranking, followed by Oxford University in fifth place.

“Once again, these results demonstrate the excellence and global impact of the research produced by the ��Ƶ’s faculty and students in a range of subjects, from pharmacology and toxicology to electrical engineering,” said Vivek Goel, vice-president of research and innovation. “Overall, U of T has done exceptionally well in international rankings this fall.”

Unlike other international rankings, the NTU only analyzes and ranks scientific papers of the top 500 universities based on research productivity, research impact and research excellence. It categorizes them into six fields and then breaks the results down further into 14 subject areas.

The bench strength of the ��Ƶ in an array of important disciplines is evident in the latest world university subject rankings issued today by the Times Higher Education (THE) for 2016-2017.

In seven of the eight subjects ranked, U of T was rated in the top 25 worldwide. The number of institutions THE rated increased this year from 800 to 980, and included locations around the world, from Zurich to Singapore, Peking to Princeton.

“We’re pleased the ��Ƶ has once again been recognized as one of the top research universities in the world,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation. “Today’s results demonstrate the remarkable depth and breadth of our faculty in teaching and producing globally important research from the humanities to computer science to medicine.”

Earlier this month, THE released its prestigious annual rankings of the top universities in the world, placing U of T in the 22nd overall spot and ninth among public universities. U of T also retained its title as the top university in Canada for the seventh year in a row.
