Wilson graduated from U of T's Trinity College in 1959 with a degree in commerce and embarked on a career in finance. He was elected to Parliament in the late 1970s, served as minister of finance under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and later as ambassador to the United States, among other roles. He died in 2019 at the age of 81.
“If a prime minister of Canada is lucky – and I mean really lucky – he will wind up with a Michael Wilson in his cabinet, ideally as minister of finance,” Mulroney says in the foreword to Wilson's memoirs, Something Within Me: A Personal and Political Memoir (Ƶ Press, 2022).
