Austin Peay this week: celebrating the Harlem Renaissance, "The Gateway" and Leonard Bernstein
Here's a rundown of what's happening at Austin Peay this week, including a celebration of one of APSU's most recognized statues, "The Gateway."
APSU TO HONOR ICONIC STATUE
More than 30 years later, Dr. James Diehr鈥檚 tin and concrete sculpture, 鈥淭he Gateway,鈥 remains an iconic part of the Austin Peay, but few people know its name or history. At 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, the retired APSU professor will return to the quadrangle in front of the Browning Building for the unveiling of a new plaque honoring his work. The event is free and open to the public, with a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Art + Design Building.

HARLEM RENAISSANCE ANNIVERSARY

Austin Peay music, theater, dance, African-American studies, art and design departments will collaborate at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall in the Music/Mass Communication Building on campus.

'BERNSTEIN AT 100, A CABARET CELEBRATION'
Edward鈥檚 Steakhouse in downtown Clarksville will host Dr. Jeffrey Williams and his APSU voice students in honor of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein. Tickets are $50 and admission includes a meal and the performance, 鈥淟eonard Bernstein: A Cabaret Celebration.鈥 The event is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 1.

AP DAY HOSTING CAMPUS PREVIEW
AP Day is a full campus preview day where you can tour campus, talk with APSU students, meet with faculty and staff and cheer on the Govs with complimentary tickets. AP Day starts 11 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center on campus and wrap up with the 4 p.m. game vs. Eastern Kentucky.
