Using about $20,000 in one-time money in the Austin Peay College of Arts and Letters budget, Interim Dean Barry Jones created several 2018-19 research grants for faculty and students.

鈥淚 do feel like that in the College of Arts and Letters, a lot of research is done,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne of my goals as interim dean is to celebrate that research.

鈥淥ne way to celebrate it is to support it.鈥

Students and professors applied throughout the fall semester for the up to $2,000 grants. With the money, they鈥檒l travel to far-off places such as India and Romania and to closer destinations such as Missouri and Vermont.

鈥淚 really got a sense of what was going on in the college and was very impressed about some of the things that are happening,鈥 Jones said.

STUDENT REACTION

The students were especially excited to hear their projects were picked.

鈥淭hat was the best part,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a big deal for a college to say what you鈥檙e working on is important and we鈥檙e going to give you money to help you out.鈥

Rei Miller was surprised her project 鈥 a multimedia interactive about how stereotyping and writing, specifically in emails, affect the writer and the reader 鈥 was awarded.

鈥淚 was honestly expecting to receive a decline, so when I saw the 鈥榗ongratulations,鈥 my brain just stopped,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was in a sort of shock and speechlessness, which then led me to saying expletives and not being able to fall asleep.鈥

Jane Seage is going to Romania next summer to work at an archaeological site, a Roman villa and settlement where she鈥檒l learn about archaeological and geophysical techniques, the culture and history of the area and the Roman impact.

鈥淕etting the grant was a huge relief since the deadline for the trip鈥檚 fees was coming up, and this is my only way to really pay for it,鈥 she said.
