New ranking places U of T first in Canada, 16th in world

Times Higher Education rates the reputations of universities among scholars around the world

The 狐狸视频 remains number one in Canada and jumps to 16th in the world in a prestigious ranking of universities with the best academic reputations released March 11.

The fifth annual 鈥檚 World Reputation Rankings rates a university鈥檚 stature by asking leading academics around the globe. The results are based on an invitation-only survey that polled about 10,500 senior and published scholars from 142 countries.

鈥淯 of T scholars and students are doing brilliant work, every day in every discipline,鈥 said President Meric Gertler. 鈥淎s a result, when it comes time for their peers to rank the world鈥檚 top universities, the 狐狸视频 is placed very high on the list. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our outstanding faculty, staff, and students 鈥 this latest accolade belongs to them.鈥

Times Higher Education, a London-based magazine that focuses on the higher education market, began compiling the world reputation list in 2011 to offer an insight into the academic prestige of the world鈥檚 top 100 universities. Last year, the reputation ranking placed U of T number one in Canada and 20th in the world.

鈥淭he list has become a widely-referenced global index of university prestige, as reputation is a key driver of success in a highly competitive global higher education market, helping institutions to attract the top student and academic talent as well as investment, research partners and benefactions, said Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education鈥檚 Rankings.

The reputation-based ranking is a subsidiary of the renowned Times Higher Education鈥檚 World University Rankings, which is published each fall and measures the institutional performance of the world鈥檚 top 200 universities in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. In the latest version of that ranking, released  last October, U of T rated 20th internationally and the best in Canada.

Recent years have seen an increase in the number of rankings reports published around the world. Although each report uses its own method of evaluating institutions, U of T has consistently placed first in Canada and among the top universities of the world.
