Asanbe

Poet, artist, diversity officer Col贸n to speak at Asanbe Diversity Symposium

At 1 p.m. Sept. 1, Puerto Rican poet Dr. Ricardo Nazario y Col贸n will visit Austin Peay State University鈥檚 Morgan University Center, Room 307, today to deliver the keynote lecture, 鈥淎 Puerto Rican/Latinx Journey in Appalachia,鈥 at the 2021 Asanbe Diversity Symposium.

And at 2:30 p.m., he鈥檒l also participate in a panel discussion in the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center.

Col贸n, author of the poetry collection 鈥淥f J铆baros and Hillbillies,鈥 co-founded the Affrilachian Poets to defy 鈥渢he persistent stereotype of a racially homogenized rural region.鈥

This important event, sponsored and organized by the APSU Department of Languages and Literature, was established in 1997 in memory of Dr. Joseph Asanbe, the first professor of African and African-American literature at APSU. The symposium is co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center, the Latino Community Resource Center, the Honors Program, the African-American Studies Program, the International Studies Program, the Latin American Studies Program, the Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies Program and the Hispanic Alumni Club.

Free vaccine clinic Monday at Foy Fitness & Recreation Center

Austin Peay is hosting an open vaccine clinic from 1-3 p.m. today, Aug. 30, in the Foy Fitness & Recreation Center on campus.

The clinic is open to anyone who wants a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or a booster shot (currently available only to immunocompromised people).

The vaccines are the best defense against COVID-19 and the highly transmissible Delta variant. If you haven't received your vaccine, please consider visiting the free clinic today.

APSU Recent Acquisitions

The New Gallery to open with 鈥楻ecent Acquisitions鈥

The New Gallery is open for its 2020-21 exhibition season with 鈥淩ecent Acquisitions,鈥 an exhibit that includes more than 125 pieces accepted into Austin Peay State University鈥檚 art collection during the last five years.

Pieces include art from Ansel Adams, Deborah Gould Hall, Bonnie Schiffman, Albert Watson, Michel Thersiquel, Khari Turner, Gamaliel Rodriguez, Philippe Sala眉n and Karen Seapker.

The exhibit runs through Sept. 17 and includes a reception for the community during the Clarksville Art Walk from 5-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 2. Michael Dickins, curator and director of The New Gallery, will give a brief gallery talk at 6 p.m.
