High schoolers experience campus life during Austin Peay’s AP Day on Oct. 6

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – When Lynzie Averitt started looking at colleges last fall, she thought she’d end up at the University of Tennessee at Martin. But then, in October of 2017, the Houston County High School senior decided to visit Austin Peay State University for AP Day.
“That made the decision for me,” Averitt said. “I came to AP Day, and that’s the day I decided to come to Austin Peay. I just loved the atmosphere and all the stuff the University offered. For me, the major deciding factor was AP Day.”
On Oct. 6, the University will welcome another batch of high school seniors to campus for its fall AP Day, allowing them to experience first-hand the excitement of “Being a Gov!” The event serves as an open house that allows guests to tour the campus and meet with professors and current APSU students. Prospective students and their parents will meet with staff from the Ƶ, Financial Aid, Housing/Residence Life, and Student Life and Leadership offices. Students and guests will also hear from APSU administrators, the Student Government Association president and other campus leaders and students.
Application fees will be waived for students who apply for admission while attending AP Day on Oct. 6.
The day begins at 11 a.m. in the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. Signs will direct guests to the center. Official AP Day activities end at 3:30 p.m., but guests can stick around for a tailgate party and free admission to the 6 p.m. football game against Tennessee State University at Fortera Stadium. Students wishing to attend that day’s football game for free need to request ticket vouchers when they sign up online for AP Day.
For Averitt, the day allowed her to meet new friends and talk over concerns she had about commuting to campus. A year later, she’s now an APSU freshman with no regrets about choosing Austin Peay over UT Martin.
“I love it here,” she said. “I love how the classes are small.”
The University will also host another AP Day on Nov. 3.
