CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The Vietnam War鈥擜merica鈥檚 first 鈥渞ock and roll war,鈥 as it came to be known鈥攈ad a distinct soundtrack that continues to help define it. That鈥檚 why Ken Burns鈥 2017 documentary, 鈥淭he Vietnam War,鈥 featured music by Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, and why The Rolling Stones鈥 hit, 鈥淧aint It Black,鈥 shows up in Stanley Kubrick鈥檚 film 鈥淔ull Metal Jacket.鈥 Even Forest Gump marched through rain and muck to the sounds of Buffalo Springfield.

Earlier this year, Steve Sullivan, an Austin Peay State University history major and music lover, decided to examine the war through the music of the late sixties and early seventies. Last month, his research, 鈥淚mportant Notes: How Music Shaped the Vietnam War,鈥 won first place in the undergraduate paper category at the Regional Phi Alpha Theta Meeting at Morehead State University in Kentucky. Phi Alpha Theta is a national history honor society, and the APSU chapter, Theta Delta, has earned national 鈥淐hapter of the Year,鈥 recognition for nine years in a row.

Several club members, accompanied by APSU faculty, traveled more than four hours in late March to attend the event, and as always, the University鈥檚 history honor society put on a good showing.

鈥淲e had a fantastic conference,鈥 Dr. Minoa Uffelman, professor of history, said. 鈥淲e won three of the six best paper prizes.鈥

In addition to Sullivan, APSU graduate student Zacharie Kinslow earned second place in the graduate student category for his paper, 鈥淐radle of Revolution: The North Carolina Back Country and the Birth of Revolutionary Sentiments.鈥 Graduate student Beth Bisciglia鈥檚 paper, 鈥淧hotography as Impetus of Change: How Photojournalism during the American Civil War Revolutionized Medicine, Faith and Sexual Norms,鈥 won third place in the same category.

Three APSU students also presented their research at the conference. Cierra Pegram, an undergraduate, presented 鈥淭he Societal Shift in Gender Roles: Women of Classical and Hellenistic Greece.鈥 Graduate student Keith Chezem presented 鈥淭he Pentagon Papers and the Fall of Richard Nixon,鈥 and graduate student Jennifer Holland presented 鈥淭urning High School on Its Head: Flipping Secondary Social Studies Classrooms.鈥

Uffelman, Dr. Kelly Houston Jones, assistant professor of history, and APSU student Nicholas Herrud also attended the event.
