Students spend winter break in Georgia for Alternative Break Trip

Students perform service work

During the winter break, a group of Austin Peay State University students and a staff member traveled to Flovilla, Georgia, for an Alternative Break Trip. The group stayed in a cabin on Lake Macintosh in Indian Springs State Park. As part of their service work, the group worked with park rangers on various projects, such as campsite maintenance, replacing light fixtures in cabins and renovating an event room.

鈥淚 left this trip with a few more skills than I had come there with,鈥 Olivia Calvert, APSU student, said. 鈥淔or example, I learned how to properly change a light fixture completely. I learned how to be patient and gained some appreciation for nature reserve. I left with gratification that we were able to assist a state park.鈥

The APSU Center of Service-Learning & Community Engagement coordinates several service trips a year. After completing a written application, students are selected to participate in a variety of service projects through the country that are organized by student leaders and faculty/staff advisors.
