Provost Lecture Series: Art professor Smithers to present April 3

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 An Austin Peay State University art professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Dr. Tamara Smithers, assistant professor of art, will present at 3 p.m., Thursday, April 3, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The title of her lecture is 鈥淭he Cult of Raphael.鈥 She will discuss the cult of the artist and his elevation to 鈥渁rtistic sainthood,鈥 especially centered on the opening of his tomb in 1833.

All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

  Smithers is an assistant professor of art. She received her Ph.D. in art history from Temple University in 2012, and she specializes in the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance. During the summer of 2013 she received two grants from Austin Peay to conduct research in Rome and Florence for her book project 鈥淭he Artistic Sainthood and Cults of Raphael and Michelangelo, 16th鈥19th 颁别苍迟耻谤颈别蝉.鈥 She has recently presented two papers related to her larger study: 鈥溾赌楻ome is not the same without Raphael鈥: The Cult of the Prince of Painters鈥 at the Early Modern Rome 2 Conference in Rome, Italy in October 2013 and 鈥淢ourning the Capo: Artistic Camaraderie and Professional Identity through Memorials in Early Modern Italy鈥 at the annual Renaissance Society of America Annual Conference in New York in March 2014. Her essay 鈥溾赌SPQR/ CAPITOLIVM RESTITVIT鈥: The renovatio of the Campidoglio and Michelangelo鈥檚 Use of the Giant Order鈥 was published last spring in Perspectives on Public Space in Rome, from Antiquity to the Present Day (Ashgate Publishing, 2013). Smithers is also currently editing a volume on new scholarship on Michelangelo.

The Provost Lecture Series seeks to foster a spirit of intellectual and scholarly inquiry among faculty, staff and students. The program will be used as a platform for APSU faculty members who are recent recipients of provost summer grants, who have been awarded faculty development leaves and who have engaged in recent scholarly inquiry during sabbatical leaves.
