APSU hosts 18th annual Bread and Words reading on Nov. 20
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Every November, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature hosts a benefit reading that not only celebrates the written word, but also raises public awareness of hunger in the local community.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Every November, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature hosts a benefit reading that not only celebrates the written word, but also raises public awareness of hunger in the local community.
This year, the tradition continues with the 18th Annual Bread and Words reading on Nov. 20 in the APSU Morgan University Center Ballroom. The evening begins with a simple meal of soup and bread at 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. reading of poetry and fiction by local writers. A donation of $5, this year for the Salvation Army, is requested at the door.
鈥淲e have had a great time over the years sponsoring this event, and I hope many of you will want to be part of it again this year,鈥 Barry Kitterman, APSU professor of creative writing, said. 鈥淟ast year, we were able to donate just under $1,000 to the Salvation Army. But of course, if someone would like to come be with us at the dinner and reading, we don鈥檛 want money to be an obstacle. We will accept any donations, big and small.鈥
Readers for this year鈥檚 event will be APSU Acuff Chair and award-winning writer David Huddle, along with local writers Reah Smith, Keith Ayer, Renee Ramsey, Shana Thornton and Holly Lanham.
Members and friends of the APSU Department of Languages and Literature interested in preparing pots of soup and loaves of bread may drop off those items shortly before 6 p.m. on the evening of the benefit.
