When freshmen and new students begin their academic careers at Austin Peay State University, they take a course known as APSU 1000 to learn more about the University, their majors and resources on campus.

One APSU 1000 class, though, decided to take their classroom experience to another level. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the students presented a $320 check to the APSU Child Learning Center (CLC) for playground improvements.

Students in the class, taught by Lynette Taylor who oversees the University鈥檚 disability services office, decided to pursue a service-learning project and researched a number of possibilities before deciding to help the CLC.

鈥淭hey voted on it after spending time discussing other possible projects,鈥 said Taylor, adding that the class held a penny drive in October to raise funds for the CLC.

Connie Sanders, director of the Child Learning Center, said the students鈥 efforts will help to make the playground improvements become a reality.

鈥淲e held a book fair in September, and that helped, but we would still be working on this project if it weren鈥檛 for these students,鈥 she said. - Dr. Melony Shemberger
