Governors Stadium is located at the corner of Marion and Summer streets on the APSU campus. Participants are encouraged to park in the Foy Center lot, bordered by Summer and Drane streets.

In the Walk to Afghanistan Project, participants are encouraged to walk the distance from Clarksville to Afghanistan, roughly 10,644 miles.

One APSU employee, Mitzie Forrest-Thompson, coordinator of dossiers and course evaluations in Academic Affairs, knows firsthand about the effort. During her husband’s last deployment to Afghanistan, she and other unit family members set a goal to walk the distance to Afghanistan. As they walked, the APSU GIS Center tracked their progress. By the end of the deployment, family members and friends not only met their goal; they walked more than 100,000 miles to honor their deployed soldiers.

This year, APSU, in partnership with the Mayor’s Fitness Council, is honored to participate in the second Walk to Afghanistan Project with the families of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, commanded by Col. Paul Bontrager, an APSU ROTC graduate. This time, an entire community will walk to honor those who serve and the families who miss them while they are gone.

Over the coming months, other special Walk to Afghanistan events will be planned, and participants are encouraged to organize impromptu walking events.

As participants walk, run, bike or perform other ways to add miles, they are encouraged to walk with intent by thinking of a soldier and the soldier’s family and the sacrifices they make during each deployment. Participants also should walk with integrity; only report miles from activities actually performed.
