Oct. 12 Americana concert kicks off busy choral season at APSU

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The Austin Peay State University choral program will kick off a busy fall season of performances and events with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The Austin Peay State University choral program will kick off a busy fall season of performances and events with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall.

That concert, titled AMERICANA, will feature the APSU Chamber Singers and the University Choir performing a diverse sampling of the many different styles that make up American music. The evening鈥檚 program will include works from the American Lutheran tradition, spirituals, a Native American inspired song, a piece that puts to music the poetry of Walt Whitman and other songs from regions such as the Deep South.

鈥淎ll this music represents the various styles and groups and traditions within our country,鈥 Dr. Korre Foster, director of choral activities at APSU, said. 鈥淚t鈥檒l be a great way to start the year, with songs representing fun American music.鈥

On Oct. 18, the University鈥檚 premier choral ensemble, the Chamber Singers, will travel to Mississippi to participate in a college showcase of choral programs throughout the southeast. The event will expose the APSU choral program to potential students in that state.

On Nov. 6, the program will host a major recruiting opportunity when middle and high school choirs from around middle and west Tennessee visit the APSU campus for ChoirFest.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really important, because if you can get younger students to come on campus for an event, a large number of those kids end up going to that school,鈥 Foster said.

The fall choral season will end on Dec. 1 with what is considered by many to be the highlight of the year 鈥 the Holiday Dinner. For the last three years, the APSU Department of Music has hosted the formal, sit-down dinner with music provided by the choral department.

鈥淲e have had people already call in the first 20 days of September about the Holiday Dinner,鈥 Foster said. 鈥淭he excitement for this event throughout the community is very apparent.鈥

Tickets will go on sale soon for this December dinner. For more information on any of these choral events, contact Foster at fosterk@apsu.edu or 221-7002.
