APSU Wind Ensemble concert to include performance of "Star Wars" film score

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Dr. Gregory Wolynec鈥檚 taste in classical music can at times be described as a bit esoteric. The Austin Peay State University associate professor of music enjoys seeking out lost masterworks or underperformed pieces by the world鈥檚 great composers.

The students who make up the APSU Wind Ensemble know this about their professor and conductor, so they were a bit confused when he handed out the sheet music for their next performance. The words 鈥淪tar Wars鈥 were printed at the top of the page.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know what my reputation is, but they were shocked when I passed it out,鈥 Wolynec said. 鈥淭he very first movie I ever saw in the movie theater was 鈥楽tar Wars.鈥 I have always loved the music to 鈥楽tar Wars,鈥 and John Williams鈥 score to that is one of the great movie soundtracks ever.鈥

At 7:30 p.m. on April 25, the APSU Wind Ensemble will close its final concert of the semester with an arrangement of that score for wind instruments in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

鈥淚t鈥檚 five movements, and it ranges from the famous 鈥 the Imperial March and the title theme 鈥 to the less famous 鈥 Yoda鈥檚 theme and Leia鈥檚 theme 鈥 to the Battle of the Forest from the third movie. It鈥檚 a symphony of movie music based on 鈥楽tar Wars.鈥欌

After the first few rehearsals, Wolynec said his students realized just how taxing and difficult the work was to perform. And, because of the symphony鈥檚 popularity, it must be presented flawlessly.

鈥淓veryone knows it, so you can鈥檛 play that in a mediocre fashion,鈥 Wolynec said.

The 鈥淪tar Wars鈥 symphony will close the evening, but the concert鈥檚 program will also include a variety of pieces in different classical genres. Graduate student Anthony Johnson will lead the ensemble in a couple of British band classics, followed by John Schnettler, director of the APSU  鈥淕overnors鈥 Own鈥 Marching Band, conducting a performance of 鈥淐athedrals,鈥 a work based on the music of Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabreli.

Before tackling the 鈥淪tar Wars鈥 symphony, the Wind Ensemble will perform composer Joseph Schwantner鈥檚 鈥溾nd the mountains rising nowhere,鈥 arguably the most difficult piece of the evening for the young musicians.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a modern piece from the 1970s, and this is the hardest piece I鈥檝e ever given the wind ensemble,鈥 Wolynec said. 鈥淚t includes all sorts of unusual instruments 鈥 singing, whistling, crystal glasses, a water gong.鈥
