APSU University Choir and Chamber Singers to perform music of British Isles April 20

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 In terms of landmass, the British Isles are only slightly larger than the state of New Mexico. But from this small group of islands off Europe鈥檚 northwest coast there exists a rather rich musical heritage, with styles ranging from Irish folk music to the royal anthems of Renaissance-era England.

At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, the Austin Peay State University Chamber Singers and the University Choir will pay homage to that region鈥檚 musical culture with the free concert, 鈥淢usic of the British Isles,鈥 in the Music/Mass Communication Building鈥檚 Concert Hall.

鈥淎ll the music is meant to represent the Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish and English poetry in music,鈥 Dr. Korre Foster, director of choral activities at APSU, said. 鈥淧eople should come to hear two things 鈥 music that is easily recognizable, like 鈥楧anny Boy,鈥 and music that is new and refreshes their ears.鈥

The concert鈥檚 program will include works such as William Byrd鈥檚 16th century 鈥淥h Lord, Make Thy Servant Elizabeth,鈥 to more contemporary pieces, including John Travener鈥檚 鈥淪ong of Athene,鈥 which was performed at Princess Diana鈥檚 funeral.

Other works include the Cornish 鈥淚 am the great sun,鈥 performed by the Chamber Singers, the Gaelic 鈥淪einn O,鈥 the Scottish 鈥淟och Lomond,鈥 the popular ballad 鈥淒anny Boy鈥 and an interpretation of W.B. Yeats鈥 poem 鈥淭he Fiddler of Dooney.鈥

鈥淭hat one brings out a festive, Irish dance quality,鈥 Foster said.

The evening will include some 鈥渋mportant instrumental additions鈥 to the music, but Foster declined to elaborate, preferring to surprise the audience with these additions.

鈥淭his concert will be going on during the Rivers and Spires festival, so it鈥檚 another musical option for that weekend,鈥 he said.
