Austin Peay State University cheerleading squad finished fifth in the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Division I championships held recently at the Band Shell/Ocean Center/Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Fla.

APSU's cheer squad competed in the prelims earlier in the week to reach the championship round along with Grambling, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Central Arkansas. Sam Houston State won Friday's championships.

Shandy Ellis-Brown serves as APSU's cheer coach. He just completed his third season as the squad's coach.

NCA divisions don't replicate those of the NCAA. Division I cheer schools are those squads competing with more than four males from Football Championship Subdivision schools, or do not have football and compete in Division I basketball. - Brad Kirtley
