Paper artist Hiebert to visit APSU March 13-16
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The artist Helen Hiebert’s dazzling hand-made paper creations, from her “Peace Balloon” to an elaborate dress known as the “Mother Tree Project,” somehow evoke the lighter and calmer aspects of the natural world.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The artist Helen Hiebert’s dazzling hand-made paper creations, from her “Peace Balloon” to an elaborate dress known as the “Mother Tree Project,” somehow evoke the lighter and calmer aspects of the natural world.
From her studio in Portland, Ore., her tranquil vision has earned her a reputation as one of the country’s most renowned hand papermakers, with exhibits around the world and even an appearance on the children’s program, “Sesame Street.” From March 13-16, she’ll visit Austin Peay State University as a guest artist, to work with the University’s art students and interested members of the community.
During her stay, she will make pulp from indigenous plant material and later pull sheets of paper from that pulp. At 7 p.m. on March 13, she’ll deliver a lecture about her work and about hand papermaking in room 401 of the Trahern Building. The event is free and open to the public.
Hiebert was born in Tennessee and attended the University of the South in Sewanee. She is the author of numerous books on hand papermaking, and in 2008, she produced a film “Water Paper Time” on her work.
