APSU Chamber Singers to tour west Tennessee this spring
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Dr. Korre Foster, assistant professor of music, has heard the Austin Peay State University music program described as 鈥淭he Best Kept Secret in Tennessee.鈥 It鈥檚 the word 鈥渟ecret鈥 that he intends to change.
That鈥檚 why this March, Foster is taking the Chamber Singers, APSU鈥檚 premiere choral ensemble, on a tour of west Tennessee.
鈥淚t鈥檚 one of our most tangible recruiting efforts,鈥 Foster said. 鈥淗igh school students get to hear the name Austin Peay State University Chamber Singers, and they get to see them and hear them. It lets them know we鈥檙e on the map.鈥
The APSU students will spend their days in local high schools, collaborating with students and talking about the University鈥檚 choral program. At night, the Chamber Singers will perform free concerts for the communities they are visiting.
The tour鈥檚 performances and times include:
鈥 12:30 p.m., March 4, First Presbyterian Church, Nashville.
鈥 7 p.m., March 5, Grace United Methodist Church, Jackson.
鈥 7 p.m., March 6, St. Peter鈥檚 Catholic Church, Memphis.
鈥 7 p.m., March 8, Christ Church United Methodist, Memphis.
鈥淚t鈥檚 also good for our University students because it gives them an idea what professional musicians do when it comes to touring and traveling the United States or the world for that matter,鈥 Foster said.
During the tour鈥檚 evening concerts, the Chamber Singers will perform works ranging in style from the English Renaissance to American Lutheranism to turn-of-the-century French music. The APSU students will sing songs in English, French, Hebrew, Latin and Yoruba.
When the tour ends, the group will return to APSU to begin preparing for their annual spring choral concert, titled 鈥淢usic of the British Isles.鈥
鈥淚n the time they spend together making music during the tour, the choir really comes together not only technically, but socially and spiritually,鈥 Foster said.
