APSU percussion ensemble holiday concert on Dec. 2

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The image that comes to mind when listening to James Taylor鈥檚 version of the Christmas classic 鈥淛ingle Bells鈥 isn鈥檛 that of a winter wonderland. Rather, you might picture yourself in a smoky bar in Memphis or New Orleans, sweating from the room鈥檚 thick, humid air.

鈥淭his is not the 鈥楯ingle Bells鈥 that you鈥檙e used to hearing,鈥 David Steinquest, professor of music at Austin Peay State University, said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 got a very bluesy kind of feel to it. It鈥檚 a whole lot different, but I think it鈥檚 fun when people get to hear these pieces they know, but they鈥檙e sort of done in a whole different way.鈥

That鈥檚 what audience members can expect from Steinquest鈥檚 newest concert, 鈥淎 Very Merry Christmas,鈥 which begins at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the Music/Mass Communication Building鈥檚 Concert Hall on the APSU campus.

鈥淭his concert is edgier,鈥 Steinquest said. 鈥淟ast year鈥檚 concert was just a little more laid back in general. We are doing some things that are really pretty on this, but there鈥檚 a little wildness going on.鈥

A band, featuring Allison Campbell and David Alford on vocals, Paul Carrol Binkley on guitar, Tony Nagy on bass, Matt DeVore on drums and Steinquest on percussion, will take the stage that evening, accompanied by the APSU percussion ensemble, to perform unique renditions of timeless holiday classics.

鈥淭hese are pieces that everybody knows, but they are dressed up in unusual and innovative arrangements that give them new life.鈥 Steinquest said.

The band will perform contemporary Christian singer Sara Groves鈥 version of 鈥淚t Came Upon a Midnight Clear,鈥 which puts the original song鈥檚 words into a completely different melody. They鈥檒l also tackle a few numbers by Christian rap/hip hop band Family Force 5.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e going to be really fun but will feel surprisingly right,鈥 Steinquest said.

The concert will feature several other holiday standards, such as 鈥淐arol of the Bells鈥 and 鈥淭he Little Drummer Boy,鈥 all distilled through the influences such as Michael McDonald, of the Doobie Brothers, James Taylor and Oregon鈥檚 genre-bending orchestra, Pink Martini.

Admission is either two cans of food, which will be donated to Loaves and Fishes, or $3. This concert sold out last year, so attendees are encouraged to get tickets ahead of time by contacting the APSU music office at 221-7818.
