Center for Creative Arts announces contest winners
The Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University has
announced the winners of the 20th annual Young Composer's Competition, a national
contest held recently.
First place was awarded to Jonathan Kolm, Austin, Texas, for "A Dream Within a Dream,"
written for soprano, violoncello and piano. Kolm earned his master's degree in composition
from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is studying for a D.M.A. in composition
at the University of Texas at Austin and is active in the Austin community as a pianist.

Steve Danyew, Sandy Hook, Conn., earned second place for his 鈥淟hotse鈥 for alto and
tenor saxophones. Danyew received his bachelor's degree in music theory and composition
from the University of Miami and has served as a fellow at the 2006 Composers Conference
in Wellesley, Mass.
Third prize was awarded to Daniel Wohl, New York City, for his work, 鈥淎 Double Life,鈥
composed for clarinet and piano. Wohl, born in Paris, France, learned to play piano
at a young age. He moved to the U.S. at age 18 to attend college and began studying
composition. He is pursuing a master's degree at the University of Michigan.
The Austin Peay State University Young Composers Competition, which began in 1987
and became a national contest in 1993, encourages young music composers by providing
professional-level performances of their music as well as financial incentive and
support.
The APSU Department of Music and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts have
awarded prizes to composers from prestigious musical institutions such as Peabody
Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, Yale University, the Cleveland Institute,
New York University and the Eastman School of Music. Composers winning ?rst place
traditionally are invited to the APSU campus to perform their music. They also interact
with both undergraduate and graduate students in composition and theory, speaking
to classes and meeting with composition students.
