Zhang鈥檚 work is easier to appreciate by understanding some of her artistic roots. She is influenced by Impressionism and Impressionist paintings, loving the idea of little, or small, bold brush strokes, combined with manipulations of light to reflect life. Yet she is also inspired by the blurring technique utilized by German visual artist Gerhard Richter.

Her work shows these different styles while also transcending them.

鈥淣o one should be tethered to a movement or person, for they are not that, and most movements are only understood in there waning moments,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat should and must stand alone is the work, which always lasts longer than the person or latest fad.鈥
