The evening will feature, for the first time, recognition of two individual awards, the Wendell H. Gilbert Award and the Spirit Award, presented to two individuals for their outstanding achievement, contribution or recognition they have brought to APSU.
Recipients of the awards were announced during a luncheon Feb. 1.
The Gilbert Award was presented to the honor’s namesake, Wendell Gilbert. A retired Army brigadier general and graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and George Washington University, Gilbert served as APSU’s vice president for development and university relations for 17 years. Among his many other accomplishments, he was named emeritus and given the Distinguished Achievement Award, APSU’s highest honor. He has served with the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Clarksville and AUSA National Resolutions Committee. In 2002, he was named deputy to the governor for homeland security and was appointed as former Gov. Don Sundquist’s chief of staff.
The Spirit Award was given to Britney Campbell, assistant vice president/marketing officer for Legends Bank. A Clarksville native and APSU alumna, she has served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Business Development Committee, YMCA Board, Leadership Clarksville, APSU Governors Club, Rivers and Spires Committee and Clarksville Young Professionals. She is a member of the Customs House Museum Guild and Candlelight Ball Committee. -- Melony Shemberger
