CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The graphic designer Mark DeYoung spent years in Europe, managing his own design company for a decade and teaching design at the Alfa College in Groningen, the Netherlands. The culture of that northern country infused with his way of looking at the world, ultimately influencing his work.
But at a new exhibit, 鈥淢ark DeYoung: Recent Interest,鈥 opening at 7 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Austin Peay State University鈥檚 Trahern Gallery, the artist hopes to show off works that have been inspired since he moved a little farther south and joined the APSU faculty in 2009. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through Feb. 11.
Before leaving for Europe years ago, DeYoung earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from Michigan State University in East Lansing. He made his way to the Netherlands after graduating, where he gained a reputation as an up-and-coming designer. He lectured at many universities and went on to teach at Alfa College in the Netherlands, where he wrote three course textbooks in Dutch and developed all accompanying course materials. The textbooks are still in use at the campus.
DeYoung鈥檚 talent for design has been sought out by such notable clients as General Electric, Boeing, Airbus, the city of Groningen and the Natuurmuseum Groningen. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across Europe, Asia and North America, and it belongs to such esteemed collections as the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Belgium, the Center for Contemporary Art in the Netherlands and PNEM Incorporated in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
In addition to serving as head of graphic design at APSU, DeYoung owns a design company, L10 Design LLC, which specializes in publication and branding through sustainable processes.
