CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 The wandering spirit of gypsies, with its wildness for adventure and its melancholy search for a home, will be presented through a moving evening of music on Nov. 16 by Austin Peay State University鈥檚 newest choral ensemble, The Governors Singers.

The concert 鈥淕ypsies on the Road,鈥 which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall, and will feature such classic works of wanderlust as Robert Schumann鈥檚 鈥淶igeunerleben鈥 and Johannes Brahms鈥 鈥淶igeunerlieder.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e doing six pieces in a short program, and it鈥檚 going to be a big challenge for the singers,鈥 Korre Foster, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at APSU, said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e doing German, we鈥檙e doing French and we鈥檙e doing English. But they鈥檝e come a long way in preparing this music.鈥

The Governors Singers meet every Tuesday evening to rehearse, but each member spends hours on his or her own, working on pitch an enunciation.

鈥淭here are only 12 students in the ensemble, and it was created to be the closest pre-professional experience they could find,鈥 Foster said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really good to push them and give them this experience, because as a vocal performance major, this is seriously a type of job they might get.鈥

The program鈥檚 gypsy-theme will touch on subjects as varied as travel and love, with the final piece of the evening offering a little optimism for the future.

鈥淭he idea of gypsies is they鈥檝e always been traveling. There isn鈥檛 a home, per se,鈥 Foster said. 鈥淏ut the last piece is called 鈥楾he Road Home鈥 by Stephen Paulus.鈥

That work ends with the lines, 鈥淩ise up, follow me, I will lead you home.鈥
