APSU Center of Excellence for Field Biology receives state award
Austin Peays Center of Excellence for Field Biology was awarded the 2003 Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Higher Education Environmental Stewardship Award last week during an on-campus ceremony.The award, which recognized the resounding success of Project WETT (Water Education for Tennessees Teachers), was presented to Laurina Lyle, coordinator of environmental education and Project WETT coordinator.
Austin Peay's Center of Excellence for Field Biology was awarded the 2003 Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Higher Education Environmental Stewardship Award last week during an on-campus ceremony.
The award, which recognized the resounding success of Project WETT (Water Education for Tennessee's Teachers), was presented to Laurina Lyle, coordinator of environmental education and Project WETT coordinator.
TDEC Commissioner Betsy Child, who presented the award to Lyle, said, 鈥淟aurina and all of the staff at the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for Field Biology are to be commended for their commitment to water quality and educational outreach.
鈥淲e are fortunate to have a program where sound national curriculum is correlated to the science education standards in Tennessee.鈥
Project WETT, which began in 1997, was recognized for many accomplishments. Among those cited, Project WETT has made tremendous strides in developing clean-water curriculum guidance to be used by teachers and establishing a network of professional facilitators capable of training teachers across the state.
USA Director of Project WET Gary Cook said, 鈥淭he national office of Project WET believes this is one of the finest programs in the nation. We are happy to continue this partnership with the APSU Center for Field Biology.鈥
Dr. Sherry Hoppe, APSU president, said, 鈥淲e're delighted that the hard work of Laurina and the dedication of our Center of Excellence for Field Biology faculty have been recognized.鈥
In addition to visiting dignitaries and faculty colleagues, Lyle's husband, Lane, their sons, Houston and Matt, and her parents were present as she was honored as the 2003 recipient of the TDEC Stewardship Award.
