APSU celebrates life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
January 14, 2002Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a day of public teach-ins Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Austin Peay State University.
8:30 a.m.: Continental breakfast. The program includes musical tributes and personal testimonials of how speakers were impacted by King's works.
10 a.m.: "Eyes on the Prize." Part one of the video will be shown, followed by an informal discussion.

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a day of public teach-ins Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Austin Peay State University.
8:30 a.m.: Continental breakfast. The program includes musical tributes and personal testimonials of how speakers were impacted by King's works.
10 a.m.: "Eyes on the Prize." Part one of the video will be shown, followed by an informal discussion.
11 a.m.: Reading of King: Poetry in Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. Led by Dr. Dwonna Goldstone, assistant professor of languages and literature. APSU students will read their favorite poetic works in tribute to King.
Noon: Using Principles of Nonviolence for Social Change in the Year 2002- Dr. Nancy Dawson, associate professor of African American studies, gives a provocative lecture and discussion on how to apply King's legacy of nonviolent resistance today, especially following the Sept. 11 attacks.
2 p.m.: The Struggle Continues in the 21st Century- Led by Dr. Shirley Rainey, assistant professor of sociology, APSU faculty and students will discuss themes and issues reflective of the ongoing struggle for social justice in American society.
3:30 p.m.: "Eyes on the Prize"- Parts two, six and seven of the video will be shown, followed by an informal discussion.
7 p.m.: Affirming Martin's African Roots: An Evening with Vibe-n-Verse, Celebrants of Africana Heritage-Chicago's finest spoken-word artists and musicians, Vibe-n-Verse provides live music, singing, dancing and original spoken-word poetry to uplift and celebrate the African and African American greatness of King. With a unique blend of energy, imagination and artistic passion, Vibe-n-Verse commemorates King's contributions to "liberty and justice for all."
All events are in the Harambee Room of the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center except the Vibe-n-Verse performance, which will be held in the Clement Auditorium.
