APSU art professor selected for residency program in France
Having worked in ceramics for nearly 30 years and exhibited displays around the world, Ken Shipley will take his art career to another dimension this summer in France.Shipley, assistant professor of art at Austin Peay State University, has been invited by the Artists in Residence Vallauris (AIR Vallauris) fellowship program in Vallauris, France. He will participate in the residency May 15-July 15, with a solo exhibition scheduled for July 7. His ceramic pieces will be on display at the AIR Vallauris gallery following completion of the program.
Having worked in ceramics for nearly 30 years and exhibited displays around the world, Ken Shipley will take his art career to another dimension this summer in France.
Shipley, assistant professor of art at Austin Peay State University, has been invited by the Artists in Residence Vallauris (AIR Vallauris) fellowship program in Vallauris, France. He will participate in the residency May 15-July 15, with a solo exhibition scheduled for July 7. His ceramic pieces will be on display at the AIR Vallauris gallery following completion of the program.
Located in the old town of Vallauris, AIR Vallauris is a nonprofit association that welcomes international artists to meet and collaborate with local artists, and to research and create new work in an artistic laboratory created specifically for them, according to the Web site.
The creators, using different mediums (sculpture, ceramics, film, paint, photographs), benefit from an equipped studio, independent furnished apartments and a gallery where their works are presented at the end of the residency period.
Vallauris has been known to artists as a ceramics town and the place where Pablo Picasso created much of his ceramic artwork beginning in 1946. But for Shipley, living in Vallauris during the program means an opportunity to concentrate on ceramics.
鈥淭he best part is to work in the studio for two months uninterrupted,鈥 Shipley said.
Shipley earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. His work can be seen in Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky and Indiana. Shipley also has exhibited his work in Germany and Japan.
