Austin Peay State University will offer a new minor in global security studies beginning in Fall 2006.
The minor will be the first academic program administered by APSU's Institute for Global Security Studies.
Greg Kaufmann, director of the IGSS, said the creation of the global security studies minor is 鈥渁 unique step鈥 for both the IGSS and Austin Peay.
鈥淭his will be the first step in the IGSS' role as a sponsor of courses and programs,鈥 Kaufmann said. 鈥淚n developing this minor, it became clear that APSU has a wealth of course offerings across all departments directly applicable to the expansive field of global security studies.鈥
Kaufmann added that the new minor would help to raise the level of global consciousness on the campus and prepare students to enter any number of security-related fields.
The minor in global security studies requires 18 hours of coursework from a variety of academic fields, including political science, history, geography and criminal justice.
The IGSS, which opened at APSU on Aug. 1, 2005, was designed to foster interest and support research in the area of global security studies, with an emphasis on homeland security and homeland defense. The program also provides services to local, state and federal government and emergency services to handle homeland security and related public health issues.
