APSU and Vol State team up to offer paralegal program

This program provides a seamless transfer, says Dr. David Kanervo, chair of the department of political science. A student can work on getting an associates degree from Volunteer State through interactive TV courses while taking core courses toward a four-year degree at Austin Peay.

Under the newly announced program, Vol State students with an associate of science degree in paralegal studies can transfer to APSU to pursue a political science degree and not lose any credit hours.
鈥淭his program provides a seamless transfer,鈥 says Dr. David Kanervo, chair of the department of political science. 鈥淎 student can work on getting an associate's degree from Volunteer State through interactive TV courses while taking core courses toward a four-year degree at Austin Peay.鈥
Kanevo believes the program will bring more students into APSU's political science program, as it would be equivalent to receiving a minor.
鈥淲e're calling it a legal studies concentration within political science,鈥 Kanervo says. 鈥淭hat concentration would take the place of a minor, so students can apply all their community college hours to a four-year degree. It's a major advantage for paralegal students to come here and have all their courses transfer.鈥
Once graduates of the program receive their degrees, jobs should not be hard to find.
鈥淭he paralegal profession is growing rapidly,鈥 Kanervo says. 鈥淏ureau of Labor statistics indicate there will be a substantial need for additional paralegals in the next 10 years. Law firms prefer paralegals with four-year degrees, so this program goes a substantial way in helping meet that demand.鈥
