APSU and public library to unveil, dedicate Clarksville Veterans' Quilt Nov. 12

Cynthia Marsh, director of the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection and professor of art, says, 鈥淪teve Lesnak, director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, and I were looking for an opportunity to combine text and fabric in a narrative quilt. Lesnak was seeking an engaging community project to celebrate Veteran's Day.
鈥淭he overall concept and format for the quilt was inspired by artist/architect, Mya Lin, and her design for the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.鈥
Between November 2004 and April 2005, community members were invited to typeset and print names of friends and family members who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces on quilt squares. The quilt squares then were sewn together by approximately 75 volunteers.
Marsh said, 鈥淲e worked very hard, met some terrific people, heard some heartwarming stories and printed about 250 quilt squares in a 12-hour workshop.鈥
The quilt was funded through an Arts Build Community Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and matched with funds from APSU's Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and Friends of the Library.
