鈥 The department in conjunction with Charter and Clarksville-Montgomery County School

webcast all area high school and APSU spring graduations to Iraq and Afghanistan and
sent dvds
of the ceremonies to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
鈥 The Sports Broadcasting program has been identified nationally as one of the premier
programs
in the country.
鈥 The department produced "Love Letters from Home" which were video messages from
loved
ones sent to service personnel abroad.
History and Philosophy
鈥 We have added four new permanent faculty to help accommodate enrollment growth in
both
undergraduate and graduate programs. We are ahead of the estimated enrollment in the
MA in Military History.
鈥 We now are able to offer upper level work in the history of the Middle East.
鈥 We have added more research language expertise to our department with Dr. Cameron
Sutt, who
speaks Hungarian. We now
have Greek, Latin, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Croatian, and
Hungarian.
Languages and Literature
鈥 Barry Kitterman published his novel, The Baker's Boy, through the Southern Methodist
University Press (2008).
鈥 Assistant Professor of English Blas Falconer published a collection of poems, A
Question of
Gravity and Light, through the University of Arizona Press (2007).
鈥 Assistant Professor of English Ken Cervelli's book, Dorothy Wordsworth's Ecology,
was
published by Routledge (2007).
鈥 Assistant Professor of German Norbert Puszkar was honored with the Socrates Award.
鈥 In May, Professor of English Mickey Wadia delivered a (uniquely entertaining) address
to the faculty in his role as recipient of the Alumni Association's Distinguished
Professor Award.
鈥 Professor of Classics Tim Winters was the invited lecturer at the annual meeting
of the Tucson
Society of the Archaeological Institute of America. He taught a graduate seminar on
Greek Epigraphy and gave a public lecture on the archaeology of the island of Salamis.
鈥 The department successfully navigated four five-year reviews: three academic audits
and one
program review.
Music
Thomas King
鈥 Dr. Thomas King has continued to lead the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz,
Austria for its now 40th year. He has been with the organization for 29 years and has been the Artistic Director for 5 years. AIMS, as it is called, hosts over 230 persons in Austria every summer and generates about 35 concerts of opera, operetta, Lieder and Spirituals during its 6 weeks in Graz, Austria the capital of Styria.

Military Science
鈥 Austin Peay cadets served as coaches and mentors for both the Upward Bound Program

Junior Govs Program this summer.
鈥 Austin Peay commissioned 19 lieutenants in FY08; overproducing by 35% for the FY.
鈥 At the ROTC summer advanced camp, 42% Austin Peay cadets finished with the highest
rating
versus only 23% of cadets nationwide.

Center for Field Biology
鈥 Dr. Floyd Scott, Professor of Biology and Principal Investigator in the Center for
Field Biology,
has sent his Graduate Research Assistant, Joshua Ream, to Manus, Brazil to present
on their
research findings at the 6th World Congress of Herpetology.
鈥 Dr. Andrew Barrass, Assistant Professor of Biology and Principal Investigator in
the Center for
Field Biology, accompanied his Graduate Research Assistant Morgan Kurz and his
Undergraduate Research Assistant Seth McCormick to Snowbird, Utah where the students
will
present at the 45th annual meeting of the Animal Behavior Society. Seth, a sophomore,
is
making his second presentation to this group and Morgan, a beginning graduate student
is making
her first.
Computer Science
鈥 Jim Vandergriff served as Program Chair for the Southeastern Section of the Mathematical
Association of America meeting.
鈥 Jiang Li and Yingbing Yu developed new courses as part of the new minor in Computer
Networking.
鈥 Jiang Li and Nancy Smithfield co-wrote a paper that was presented by Jiang Li at
the ACM Mid-
Southeast Chapter in Gatlinburg, TN
鈥 Yingbing Yu presented a paper at the ACM Mid-Southeast Chapter Meeting in Gatlinburg,
TN.
鈥 Nancy Smithfield received an award for Excellence in Academic Advising.
Mathematics
鈥 Jackie Vogel is chairing the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association (TMTA) meeting
that
will be held at APSU in September. She is also president of the organization.
鈥 Jackie Vogel is also serving as Program Co-Chair for the 2009 National Council of
Teachers of
Mathematics (NCTM) Regional Conference in Nashville where 3,000-5,000 mathematics
teachers are expected to attend. Mary Lou Witherspoon is serving as the Local Arrangements
Committee Co-Chair for this conference.

Woodward Library
Gina Garber, digital services librarian and assistant professor of library administration,
was a 2008
Socrates Award recipient.
Christina Chester-Fangman, Gina Garber, and Nancy Gibson, all assistant professors
of library
administration, presented a workshop, 鈥淧lagiarism: Addressing the Complex Issue in
Any Course,鈥 at the
2008 Teaching Professor Conference held May 16-18 in Kissimmee, Florida.
Nancy Gibson, instructional technology librarian and assistant professor of library
administration, was
elected as treasurer of the New Members Round Table of the American Library Association,
and will
serve as chair of the College & University Libraries Section of the Tennessee Library
Association for the
upcoming school year.
Sharon Johnson, instructional services librarian and associate professor of library
administration, was
appointed to serve a two-year term as an intern on the American Library Association's
Public Awareness
Committee.
Jonathan Bates, library associate, was accepted to the graduate program at the School
of Information
Sciences, University of Tennessee. He will begin classes this fall as a distance education
student.
Center for Extended and Distance Education
鈥 Julia McGee, Interim Dean, CEDE- served as Chair of the TBR Continuing Education
and Economic
Development Committee and as a member of the CEED Reporting Subcommittee. In addition,
Julia
was nominated by the Division of Student Affairs for exemplary staff member of the
year in 2008. In
2007, Julia was a guest speaker at the Chamber's Excel Program at NEHS. Also, Julia
serves as a
volunteer in the Helping One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) Program at Byrns-Darden Elementary
School.

grant is worth one million dollars over four years.

Student Affairs Division
Dr. Sherryl Byrd, associate vice president for student affairs and senior student
affairs officer at Austin Peay State University, has been appointed to a leadership
position with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
She will serve a two-year term on the NASPA Region III Advisory Board as liaison to
the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) Executive Committee.
Dr. Byrd also serves on the Strategic Planning Committee and is a Foundation Board
Member for SACSA as well as the Secretary for the Tennessee Board of Regents Student
Affairs Sub-Council.
Greg Singleton, Dean of Students received the Dr. Karlem Reiss Award at the 2008 Southeastern
Interfraternity Conference for outstanding service to the interfraternal community
in the southeast. Only the 5th recipient in the 40 year history of the conference.
He was also selected to serve as the National Scholarship Officer for Kappa Alpha
Order National Fraternity and was featured in the University of Memphis Magazine as
a distinguished alumnus of the University of Memphis
David Davenport, director of University Recreation was chosen the 2008 TBR Maxine
Smith Fellow.
Beulah C. Oldham, director of Disability Services, was appointed recently to the Advisory
Council for the Education of Students With Disabilities. The council monitors progress
in programs serving children with disabilities, issuing an annual report.
Joe Mills, director of Housing, Residence Life and Dining Services served as a faculty
member for RELI (Regional Entry-Level Institute) for new housing/residence life professionals
at Furman University.
Connie Sanders, interim director of the Child Learning Center graduated with a Bachelor
degree in professional studies.
Student Affairs
鈥 Coordinated the Unity Celebration Dinner with speaker Nikki Giovanni which included
a poetry contest for students, winner seated with Dr. Giovanni, and personal interview
with The All State staff.
鈥 Developed and implemented Student Affairs student development travel funds program.
Funds assist students who travel to present research, represent the University with
their organizations, and some leadership development.
鈥 Sponsored campus wide staff development with nationally recognized higher education
lawyer and consultant on debriefing Virginia Tech and what can be learned from the
investigation.
鈥 Provided support to Athletics to promote sports events.
鈥 Presented first Charles M. Waters Award to a graduating long-term student staff
member on The All State staff to Dave Campbell, now on staff with The Leaf Chronicle.
Student Government Association
A ribbon cutting to introduce The Peay Pickup trolley service will begin at 7:15 a.m., Monday, Aug. 25 in front of the Browning Administration Building on the Austin Peay State University main campus. Recently, the Student Government Association at APSU partnered with the Clarksville Transit System (CTS) to provide students, faculty and staff free transportation around campus via The Peay Pickup and around town on CTS buses. The Peay Pickup trolley will be available beginning Aug. 25. CTS will operate the trolley from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday-Friday when classes are in session.
African American Cultural Center

Child Learning Center
鈥 The Child Learning Center maintained their Accreditation from the National Association
for the
Education of Young Children.
鈥 The Child Learning Center scored the Three Star Rating from the Tennessee Department

Human Services with a score of 6.38 out of 7.0.
Disability Services
We have our first Adaptive Technology Coordinator, Mr. Philip Voorhees. He brings
a wealth of
knowledge on adaptive technology for students with disabilities and will assist the
university in the
advancement of providing technology access to all students.
University Recreation
