After national search, APSU taps one of its own as college dean
After a national search and interviews of the top candidates, Austin Peay State University officials have named one of their own to head up the Universitys largest college.Dr. David Denton, Clarksville, has been appointed dean of the College of Professional Programs and Social Sciences, subject to the approval of the Tennessee Board of Regents. The college has 90 full-time faculty and more than 4,000 students.

Dr. David Denton, Clarksville, has been appointed dean of the College of Professional Programs and Social Sciences, subject to the approval of the Tennessee Board of Regents. The college has 90 full-time faculty and more than 4,000 students.
Denton has served as interim dean of the College of Professional Programs and Social Sciences since 2003. He served concurrently as interim director of the School of Business during 2005-06. Between 2002 and 2005, he was chair of the psychology department.
Remarking on Denton's 鈥渨ealth of administrative experience鈥 at APSU, Dr. Bruce Speck, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said, 鈥淚n working with David, I have appreciated his ability to focus on academic excellence while recognizing the economic constraints under which we all labor.
鈥淗e has shown through a national search that his academic and administrative credentials are competitive.鈥
As interim dean, Denton's duties included providing day-to-day management and strategic leadership for the college's three schoolsthe School of Business, School of Education and School of Nursingand six academic departmentshealth and human performance, military science, political science, psychology, social work and sociology.
Denton earned the Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1996. He received the Master of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he also earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, graduating magna cum laude in 1982.
Denton has had numerous scholarly articles published and has made many professional presentations. Among his works in progress is 鈥淭he Psychology of Work,鈥 a survey textbook in industrial/organizational psychology, slated for publication in Spring 2008 by Wadsworth.
He's on the editorial board of 鈥淎pplied H.R.M. Research鈥 and is a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Society for Psychologists in Management and the Association for Psychologist Science. -- Dennie B. Burke
