After 12 years, APSU loses federal funds for key summer youth camp

This summer, Austin Peay State University will be unable to host the 13th annual National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) due to major federal budget cuts.
APSU's first summer NYSP received glowing reviews from the federal government and from participants. NYSP provides opportunities for underprivileged youth to experience summer camp while also introducing them to life on a university campus.
Of the 278 programs nationwide, only 53 were funded this year from a limited NYSP discretionary account. Although APSU, with its stellar record, applied, only two programs in Tennessee were fundedLane College, Jackson, and Tennessee State University, Nashville.
According to Dr. Diane Berty, interim associate vice president for student affairs, the University will seek grant funding, if available, for 2006-07.
