Afghan women returning to college after five-year prohibition

December 10, 2001

Kabul University has opened its doors to women for the first time since 1996, reports the Dec. 6 edition of the "The Chronicle of Higher Education." Last Saturday, dozens of female students, who had been barred from attending college by the Taliban regime, lined up to register for the next academic session. The prospective students removed their veils, and after years of silence, spoke to a committee of male professors. "It's like we are dreaming," said a former medical student.
