Adjunct marketing prof named Citizen of the Year
Ask Khandra Smalley for which community activity in Clarksville-Montgomery County does she enjoy volunteering the most, and its a question that has the Austin Peay State University alumnus and adjunct faculty instructor stumped.Thats a hard one to answer, she said. Each organization provides a different need, whether it is working with adults who have lost their jobs and need to learn new skills or helping young students who are deciding on their future, to providing meals for the homeless. Its hard to say.

鈥淭hat's a hard one to answer,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ach organization provides a different need, whether it is working with adults who have lost their jobs and need to learn new skills or helping young students who are deciding on their future, to providing meals for the homeless. It's hard to say.鈥
Her unselfish commitment to help improve the local area earned Smalley a Citizen of the Year award during a recent Volunteer Appreciation dinner. She was among five recipients, one of which was fellow APSU alumnus Beverly Parker ('95).
Smalley's volunteerism was actually a quality she inherited from her parents.
鈥淐larksville is home. My father retired from Fort Campbell, and my mother taught in the local school system for more than 20 years,鈥 she said. 鈥淏oth were very active in our community, so it just came natural for me to get involved.鈥
The same devotion she has to community service extends to APSU. In 2007, she served on the presidential search committee that led to the selection of current President Tim Hall. She is part of a committee seeking a new dean for the College of Business, and she also is a member of the Govs Club.
Smalley is vice president of marketing research at F & M Bank, where she has worked since September 1995. She earned a Master of Science in management from APSU in 2005. For the last three years, she has taught Leadership in Community Organization for the President's Emerging Leaders Program (PELP), Principles of Marketing and Principles of Management. -- Melony Shemberger
