Activities scheduled for Disability Awareness Month

Walking to class, listening to a lecture, reading a sentence accurately or typing e-mail are daily actions most people can do without thinking twice.

But for those who have disabilities, such activities can be a challenge. Their world is different.

Thats what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

But for those who have disabilities, such activities can be a challenge. Their world is different.

That's what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

The month began with a kick-off, featuring APSU President Tim Hall and Miss Wheelchair Tennessee Kasondra Farmer, March 31.

The STAR Center Access Express is from 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 9 in the MUC Plaza. The mobile unit provides computer access evaluation, workplace accommodations, employer orientations and assistive technology evaluations to those in need of the services but who are unable to access them.

Refreshments will be served, and free T-shirts will be available to those individuals with a valid APSU I.D.

As part of the month's celebration, Matt Glowacki will be the guest speaker. His presentation, 鈥淒iversity According to South Park and Family Guy,鈥 will tackle the issues of stereotyping and diversity in the media. His talk is sponsored by the offices of Student Life and Leadership and Disability Services at APSU.

The Wheelchair, Blind, Crutches Challenge (WBC Challenge) will be from noon-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 in the 鈥渂owl鈥 between Woodward Library and MUC. The WBC Challenge is an obstacle course that will enable students who do not have a disability to understand the difficulties those with disabilities face every day.
