Activities planned for Disability Awareness Month throughout April

Walking to class, listening to a lecture, reading a sentence accurately or typing e-mail are daily actions most people can do without thinking twice.
But for those who have disabilities, such activities can be a challenge. Their world is different.

Thats what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

That's what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

The month begins with a workshop, titled 鈥淧rotect Your Investment 鈥 Yourself,鈥 from 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 4 in the Morgan University Center (MUC), Room 308.

The STAR Access Mobile Unit is 2-5 p.m., Wednesday, April 11 in the MUC Plaza. The mobile unit provides computer access evaluation, workplace accommodations, employer orientations and assistive technology evaluations to those in need of the services but who are unable to access them.

A drive-in conference, titled 鈥淜eeping the Issues in Focus,鈥 will be from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, April 13 in the MUC Ballroom. Registration is from 9-9:30 a.m. Sponsored by the Tennessee Association on Higher Education and Disability, the conference will feature keynote speaker Robin Jones, project director of the Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Registration information is available online at www.apsu.edu/disability.

The Wheelchair, Blind, Crutches Challenge (WBC Challenge) will be from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, April 18 in the front sidewalk area of the MUC.
