4 APSU art alumni to exhibit work at Downtown Gallery
A new exhibit opening next month at the Austin Peay Downtown Art Gallery will showcase the work of four recent Austin Peay State University art graduates.The group show, featuring pieces by Greg Sand, Katy Whitfield, Matthew D. Smith and Morgan Conwell, will open with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 4. The exhibit will run through March 27.

The group show, featuring pieces by Greg Sand, Katy Whitfield, Matthew D. Smith and Morgan Conwell, will open with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 4. The exhibit will run through March 27.
Sand, an artist and photographer, will present works that explore the issues of existence, time and death. In 2009, he was selected by critic Catherine Edelman and the Griffin Museum of Photography as one of 鈥渢he most exciting new artists emerging in the world of photography.鈥
Whitfield, a self-described 鈥渆nergetic oil painter,鈥 will exhibit pieces with abrasive surfaces, giving the impression that they have been severely damaged.
鈥淪ometimes I force myself to take a few days off from a work, only to allow myself to come back and happily destroy it,鈥 she said. 鈥淎fter I tear my work apart, I feel for it again and begin to mend it.鈥
Smith, an artist and photographer, will present several landscape from his series, 鈥淭rees, creatures, and the water connecting it all.鈥
Conwell, a local artist and 2009 APSU graduate, has been creating artwork for more than 20 years. Her watercolors are on display at locations throughout the city, such as the Frame Maker Custom Framing Shop and the Clarksville Athletic Club.
Last year, the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts leased a building in downtown Clarksville to provide gallery space for APSU alumni and faculty. The gallery, located at 116 Strawberry Alley, is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.
